A Nifty Spree for me
Hello,
I purchased this 85ish honda nifty 50 for $300 delivered (sight unseen) from Gumtree (Australia's version of Craigslist)
Not running
Frame broken (footwell)
Both tyres flat
Fairing /plastics broken etc
Missing parts
No licence plate / papers
So yeah. Bit off more then I can chew lol
I am posting this as a Diary for myself and hopefully it will help / inspire others
I have had it for a week now and thanks to people who have rode this path before me and posted great information ,
I have got it running !!!
So Thank you for this page and infomation
Pumped tyres up ,have held air all week so far .
Considering they were completely flat , must of been sitting for a long time!
I have ordered a nq50 carburettor (from aliexpress)
Air filter (ebay)
Fuel lines and filter (ebay)
Plans for the Honda.
Get running reliably
Clean up
Source parts - unless I can find a donor honda I don't think I will be able to keep it original .
Fresh Paint.
Welcome to my journey.

Re: A Nifty Spree for me
Congrats on achieving that first accomplishment, running.
Makes me wonder why you ordered another carburetor ?
Hope you can find a Nifty that has been set aside and will provide those things you'll need to bring it back to top shape.

Re: A Nifty Spree for me
Thank you!
I ordered another carburettor because I broke the bystarter and could not find a replacement on its own .
Yes, I am on the look out .
I will also edit the first post as I go . It will be a running price guide of what I have spent .
Cheers for reply .

Re: A Nifty Spree for me
So i cleaned the carburettor out.
When I start it now the scooter sounds horrible .
No power to even move back wheels .
Moving screws seams to have no impact at all.
Then all of a sudden it starts revving like it will take off like a rocket with back wheel spinning like crazy .then just stops running .
Any ideas would be great.
I may take a video next opportunity

Your "new" carburetor, if it is a Chinese clone, is the problem.
No way for me to diagnose exactly what is wrong.
That requires some eyes-on.
But I guarantee something involved with installing that carb is the problem.
If you're just twiddling those screws hoping to hit on a good spot, you're not doing it right.
Your new carb will not have the same initial screw settings that are the same as the OEM carb.
Before you do something terminal, get someone there to take a look. You can do that, surely...no?

Re: A Nifty Spree for me
I have not got the new one delivered yet .
Yeah ,just fiddling around .I learn by trial and error .
And if I stuff it ùp it's cheap.
Yes I can easily get someone to look at it . But then I'm not really learning anything . I just thought the problem may sound familiar to someone .

Re: A Nifty Spree for me
I like the Nifty Fifty head plastic - wish the US got them..
The bystarter system take a minute or two to close up. You may be able to rule that system out.
What's the time frame between the starting and revving point? When I start it now the scooter sounds horrible .

Yeah ,just fiddling around .I learn by trial and error ....Same for me...reading comprehension has never been real good.

Yes I can easily get someone to look at it . But then I'm not really learning anything ....Here I disagree...if your looker is willing to let you go to school on their knowledge and help.
I just thought the problem may sound familiar to someone ....And it DOES sound familiar....You say you broke the bystarter...This factor will have some effect on the runability....How specifically is it broke ?...Did the needle break off and is it stuck in the carb body ?

Re: A Nifty Spree for me
Hello,
I broke the tip off the bistarter
But
I got the replacement carburettor today .
Bike is running and ridable but it wants to take off like a rocket , regardless of the idle /air screw adjustments .
When I take a look next , I feel it has something to do with the "pin" in the carburettor that connects to the accelerater cable maybe . But that's just my first line of idea.
Got to have a backyard ride ,so it's a good start
Will update how I go

Also the holes in the air filter box are very rough
Are they stock?

No, holes in airbox are not stock.Niftyspree wrote: ↑Thu Aug 04, 2022 2:11 am Also the holes in the air filter box are very rough

You can experiment by taping them shut, and adjusting the carb starting with a closed airbox as it would be from the factory.
Very likely you have an issue with the throttle cable as you suspect regarding the "take-off like a rocket" issue.
I notice the missing cylinder shrouds. Those covers NEED to be in place for proper cylinder cooling.
Risk of damage is high without proper cooling.

That's good to know about holes
I feel you are correct regarding cable .
I will install the shrouds before starting again
Thank you motormike.
I appreciate your input sincerely!

Yes, mine are very "used" lol
intresting that honda did not export the exact same style everywhere.
