fuel level is stable, even more so with the bystarter plugged in
Actually I noticed the fuel level appears to be at the very top of the fuel bowl, I said the fuel line puts out well more than should be needed, what if the engine's slowly flooding?

so then what can I try now, aside from replacing parts?

Take the carb apart and make sure the float floats. Then look in tech documents and fine the cleaning and polishing the seat. Inspect the needle for any dings in it, then replace any part that is suspect. Oh and double check the float height setting.

I drained the bowl, then started the engine, at idle it was at about half way, maybe a little under, then I did my test run and it died where it usually does, when I checked the level it was all the way up
edit: is this the guide I'm looking for?
if so does it mater what sort of toothpaste I use? I've got at least a few sorts of generic and some of that Isoactive Foam stuff

I had to rip most of the wadding off the qtip to make it fit in that hole, but I just went around the long loop with no trouble, seems to be fixed

late update, about an hour later the symptoms returned, I'll do the same thing tomorrow and see what it does, probably just old fuel regunking it

drained the fuel, flushed the line, cleaned the float needle seat extra well, it almost made it all the way around the test loop.
Whilst I was gone for my sister's graduation my dad took the liberty of ordering me a new muffler and carb, both for the '96 SA50, not my SA50P, I'm very much hoping there's no significant difference beyond the bigger jet and lack of exhaust restricter, which seems reasonable enough.
So then I'm gonna replace the fuel line, try to find one of those stone cone filters (any suggestions on that?), and all the gas. That ought'a keep any nasty bits from gunking up the new float valve
