Noob help! Spree keeps dying.

Actually I noticed the fuel level appears to be at the very top of the fuel bowl, I said the fuel line puts out well more than should be needed, what if the engine's slowly flooding?

That would mean the needle/seat and/or float is bad.

so then what can I try now, aside from replacing parts?

Take the carb apart and make sure the float floats. Then look in tech documents and fine the cleaning and polishing the seat. Inspect the needle for any dings in it, then replace any part that is suspect. Oh and double check the float height setting.

I drained the bowl, then started the engine, at idle it was at about half way, maybe a little under, then I did my test run and it died where it usually does, when I checked the level it was all the way up

edit: is this the guide I'm looking for?
if so does it mater what sort of toothpaste I use? I've got at least a few sorts of generic and some of that Isoactive Foam stuff

Crest with Stannous Fluoride prevents geartooth cavities, but Scope with the stripes leaves Spree's breath Minty-Fresh.

Actually anything with micro-abrasives like a car polish or rubbing compound is probably better. Toothpaste is all I had on hand and it did the job.

Beware the float needle that looks OK. It's tipped with a cone of 25 year-old rubber and the clearance in its bore is super-critical because the float forces acting on it are very small. I couldn't see a thing wrong with mine, but my early Aero carb overfill/leak issue disappeared with a new one.

I had to rip most of the wadding off the qtip to make it fit in that hole, but I just went around the long loop with no trouble, seems to be fixed

Back and forth to the gas station, roughly a mile each way, the only problem is that I'm going 25 (haven't derestricted it yet)

Very good, so where do you want your Nationals Champion certificate sent? It was to much fuel, not enough.

late update, about an hour later the symptoms returned, I'll do the same thing tomorrow and see what it does, probably just old fuel regunking it

drained the fuel, flushed the line, cleaned the float needle seat extra well, it almost made it all the way around the test loop.

Whilst I was gone for my sister's graduation my dad took the liberty of ordering me a new muffler and carb, both for the '96 SA50, not my SA50P, I'm very much hoping there's no significant difference beyond the bigger jet and lack of exhaust restricter, which seems reasonable enough.

So then I'm gonna replace the fuel line, try to find one of those stone cone filters (any suggestions on that?), and all the gas. That ought'a keep any nasty bits from gunking up the new float valve
