Elite Acceleration

Post by abalmer »

I am trying to figure out why my 88 SB50 honda elite accelerates so slowly. I tested the compression and it says its 120 after about 6 kicks. I opened up the carb and it was clean but I blew out the main jet just to be sure. I openeed the airbox and make sure the air filter was in there and it was, and correctly oiled. After the scooter hits 15 MPH it accelerates quickly and will go to 35 + MPH without a problem. I have the air fuel mixture screw at 1 and 7/8 turns out. I have messed around with these screws but nothing seems to help the acceleration. Thanks!

It's called "no variator" and that means you are starting out in high gear and once the clutch locks up that poor llittle 50 CC motor is bustin' it's balls to move you. So acceleration is gonna be poor and the only cure for it is a variator (CVT).

you could install a BBK to help with acceleration. It will still be a single speed tranny, just that it will be putting more torque into that single speed.

But I thought wheelman said that the 88 elite SB50 does not have a variator.

It doesn't, but the BBK adds cubic centimeters and that adds torque which helps acceleration.

So the SB50 is supposed to have horrible acceleration? I have an 85 spree that will accelerate WAY faster. I mean my elite is BAD. Could it be a clogged exhaust?

The sb50 should be slightly better than the spree on top end but not really a noticable difference on the bottom end. Could be the exhaust but that would usually have an impact on your top end. I would check the belt drive system. Maybe a previous owner has modded it for more top speed at the cost of acceleration.

Im having the same problem with my Elite. My friend and I take out our bikes, I get the 88 Elite 50 LX, and he gets my Spree. And his acceleration is way better. But I end up blowing him out of the water in the end. So a variator would do the trick? Im new to modding bikes so I have no idea what all of these things mean.

Your LX already has a variator. It should dominate the spree in every aspect except for getting close to the ladies :geekdance:
You should check your CVT system out. Like the belt width, clutch, rollers...
