Spree bogging out at 25

Post by ahamay0_0 »

New guy here that has been lurking and learning some tips and tricks.
I appreciate all the tech help on the spree. I recently decarboned pipe and now have been getting lean plug chops wfo. Anybody have experience fattening up to a m70? Did air leak test and have everything else dialed in. Hit 26 mph and she starts to run out of steam. Used to do 32 to 35 no effort and was right on the plug for the color.

yep, my first guess would be compression although could be carb/jet issue.

Float level low will cause this as will a vacuum leak (case seals besides the intake system). I never heard of anyone having to upjet a stock Spree.

Check yer airbox seal dude! make sure the srew is tight and snugged down right. Mine wasnt and ran super duper lean. All that was wrong was I haddnt tightend the screw properly .my filter element was also rotten. Now I bet that things were lean carb wise all along and the plugged up exhaust hid that, by making things rich. Someone correct me on that if I am wrong about plugged muffler casing thing to be richer than normal.

Did compression test 120 psi 3 seperate times, Checked all air seals on manifold, airbox tube, airbox lid, even exhaust. Everything is good. If I go down a good slope it will go past flat spot it will run up to 35 mph. I can take it down to @ 27 mph and roll it back up to 35 no probs.
I was thinking that because the filter was dry (cleaned and lightly oiled per manual specs now ) and pipe had some carbon build up it that maybe it was running a little rich. I'm on bottom groove with the clip and everything else is seemingly set right. *?

A dry filter will make you run LEAN not rich. Why are you in the bottom groove on the needle? What problem prompted this change?

Change was prompted after a thorough cleaning/ maintenance session. Just like to make sure all was right with plug, hoses were good, brake pads, lube cables, etc basically a good going over. Needed to clean the dust off, wash, wax and polish, Only has 2235 original miles. Sat in someones garage for 20 years and was such a clean example, needed to be brought back to life. Has run excellent for 3 years with no issues. This time seemed to act up.

Greetings:

Carb "adjustment", once right should stay right. Compression is OK but maybe running a needle-click rich has resulted in a rapid carbon buildup in the exhaust or perhaps the piston top/head. Once you've established the assembly is correct, look for normal wear and build-up issues. You probably can't adjust the carb out of this one.

Otherwise you richened the mid-range for no reason what so ever and now you have a mid range problem. Put the clip back where it belongs and chances are your problem will go away

Sorry it took so long to post up. Went to a 70 main and now the Spree purrs right up to 32 on the gps. No stumbles or flat spots. Still is a little cold blooded when first running but after 50 to 100 yards runs like a scalded cat. Some longer down hills she'll get up to 37 mph. Thanks for all the help on here.
