'84 spree problems

Post by spree84 »

Hey guys, I bought an '84 Honda spree. Its a bugger to get started. It will not start at all with the electric, but will with the kick start. Also it will not idle, just stall. Today I was out riding it and it started making a loud rattling noise from the rear end. I thought it might be the starter dragging, but I'm pretty sure its coming from the chain case. What could it be? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You should go through and do a 1. compression test, 2. clean, inspect and adjust the carb. There are no chains on the spree, so you might want to open up the belt/clutch case and the gear case and see whats goin on. Where did you get this scoot, I hope nobody sold it to you and said it was a "good runner".

Hello kpa2004, and thanks for the quick reply. I will do a compression check and clean the carb. How do I get the clutch case apart? I jumped to quick and bought it. The guy had it out and driving it when I got there. It sounded pretty good. Now I can hardly get it started. It only has 3144kms on it.

Take the bolts out of the left side cover and the belt, pulleys and clich will be inside.

Download a manual here.

Thanks Bear45-70 for the manual. I think I may have found my noise, the kick start is very loose. What is involved with fixing this? Is there a bushing or bearing that would need to be replaced? Also I checked the fluid in the case, and there is nothing. I put some 10W40 in and it leaked back out.

Probably a spring is weak or broken. You will have to remove the cover to see what is going on. Nothing belongs in the case. The scooter has a belt drive and it is in there. Oil on the belt is a bad thing. The only oil goes in the very rear by the rear axle and it is only hold 3 oz.

the only place you put oil is in the very back by the rear tire if you look at the case there will be a bolt in the middle of it and then there should be writing like oil 0009 or something weird like that but if that's where you put the oil in the first place then you will need a new gasket

fastplastic, thanks for the pic. That is where I put the oil, and it leaked back out. Will I still be able to get gaskets for such an old unit?

and like in my case Honda dealer is far away and didn't fill like going on the internet but gasket paper was at the local auto store, its a pain but it works plus you don't have to wait for it to get shipped :thumbwink:
