Wind the starter up until it will no longer depress. Choke it and pull the left hand brake this will release the spring and turn the motor over.

I also have one of these sitting around with a broken starter spring. I know these are no longer available from honda and I have read on some other sites that there are a few methods of converting to a standard kick start assy. I think this has to be one of the worst design flaws of all time... is it really so hard to kick over a 50?

Has anyone found a suitable fix for this spring or done the conversion? Any help or insight welcome

I eventually finished this rebuild, but have no knowledge of how to convert to kick start. i know for a fact you can start it by removing the right side flywheel cover and use electric drill and 17 mm socket on the flywheel nut. dont remember whether its CW or CCW. My Spree's are CCW, so the Express may be CW.

Denman. Haven't heard from you in years.

Those springs? You should be able to have new ones made up custom if you can't find servicable used. Lots of custom spring manufacturers in the US. Springs are always wearing out / breaking.

I have done the conversion to kick start. Not really that hard to do.
