New to the Spree culture
I purchased what I believe to be a 1984 spree. Model number says nq50e? Color r127? Anyway, I was told it ran a year ago but has been sitting up for a year. I was wandering if anyone could recommend what I should do first to try to get in running once again. Any help Is very much appreciated.

Re: New to the Spree culture
NEVER use ether with a 2 stroke. Two bad things can happen, washes the oil off them cylinder walls and can explode in the crank case and blow your reeds out.ute wrote:Clean out gas tank ( new filter )and oil tank ( new fresh oil and gas )

If there is any doubt about the air filter, replace it. It is like $5.

Re: New to the Spree culture
Thanks for the help! What is a bystarter? If that is the kickstart I don't see one, I think it's electric start only.

Btw so far I pulled out the battery and added some acid as it was low and it is now at auto zone being charged. Tomorrow I will start the cleaning process and suggested.
Re: New to the Spree culture
The bystarter is Honda's name for the electric automatic choke (actually an enrichment system and not a traditional butterfly choke), a black plastic item on top of the carb with wires coming out of it. Nothing to do with the kick starter which was only available on the 1986 and 1987 Spree.

Anyone know how to drain the gas and oil tanks and what type of oil and gas to put back in?

I take the tank off, remove the petcock from the bottom then drain it into the waste gas can. Then gently pull the fuel filter out with some needle nose and wash it off. Clean the tank, put the filter back and reinstall.
You can drain the oil tank by sliding off the hose from the bottom.
Easy.

Re: New to the Spree culture
Agreed ..ether will kill a stroker ...but ... just a squirt to help fire the first time ( but if your a newbie don't use if you don't know how much )
I have even started a stroker ( premix) on straight gas to help fire that puppy up
As for oil tank pull lines off and drain ...fill lines with oil to help with the first start ..don't want to run it dry
If it won't start ..think it through , do you spark ? do you have fuel ? do you have air ? ..thats all a motor needs to run

If you must prime a 2 stroke motor, NEVER use ether, use an oil squirt can or a plastic squeeze bottle with premix in it. It can not hurt your motor.ute wrote:Agreed ..ether will kill a stroker ...but ... just a squirt to help fire the first time ( but if your a newbie don't use if you don't know how much )

Oh and ether can damage ANY 2 stroke motor and No manufacture will ever recommend using ether.
You are wrong about what a motor needs to run:
The spark has to be at the right time.
The fuel has to be in a ratio to the air in the running range of the engine (14 to 1 is the perfect ratio).
The above applies for the air too.
And last but not least and is the first thing you should check is compression, because without enough compression you can have everything else perfect and it still won't run.
