stiff front forks

Post by killerpancake »

I've never had to mess with the front suspension of a moped, and I'm wondering how big of a job it would be to rebuild one. Whether it's on a spree or other moped, im sure they're somewhat alike, enough at least to give me a general idea. Anyone wanna lend a hand?
If it don't fit, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.

I've taken apart some Elite/Spree/Gyro's. Pretty much the first thing I do is to compress the spring, and make sure there will not be parts flying when you release the 'c-clip'. Mind your personal safety! I compress, and tie off the legs with heavy wire, release the c-clip then put the fork on the ground, and remove the wire. There's no doubt other ways to do this. 'Jamz and others have done this many times, search, read their postings and reply's to your thread.

The forks are very simple - they run dry. They have conical rubber bump stops to progressively add some travel at the end of stroke.

And this is why NO ONE should work on these things without the service manual.

Good advice. Took my variator apart to change to new weights. Still had the stock weights in it, and my entire variator was filled with grease. Not sure if it was from the factory like that but I removed all of it and installed new weights, and it added a whole lot of pickup and go to my ride. Unfortunatly I didnt know I should remove the plate to add more speed and I dont have an impact tool to remove it right now.

When these scooters were built, the standard thinking was the rollers needed to be packed in grease. Better materials and a rethink or two now means no grease. So don't put grease back into the variator, at least no more than a thin film.
