87 eliteS, only starts with no air filter.

Post by killerpancake »

Like the title says, im working on a 1987 honda elite S. it will only start with no air filter, and can only be driven WITH an air filter. im thinking the air filter was lubed with too thick of oil, so i'm currently cleaning it, it's a brand new filter btw, though i have no idea what they used as oil.
SO, other than maybe the wrong oil, what are some other possibilities?
If it don't fit, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.

that's what i was told, but then again she told me it was an 87 spree before i saw it.... either way, elite s. starts no filter, can only drive with filter. starts fine when it's warm with a filter, but not when cold. I thought it was the bystarter, auto choke, but then she told me it was replaced, now im starting to wonder if it was really replaced.

was the main jet changed? check to see if there is anything blocking the inlet on the airbox

i cleaned the carb about 3 times, just to be sure. cleaned the filter, oiled the filter, BUT i hooked the bystarter to a 12 volt source and it didn't move even after 10 minutes. I believe the problem is just a NEW BAD bystarter. i'm gonna try a known good one tomorrow. Hopefully that's the Prob.

It's an 87 se50 non-Iowa. Dealer said bad bystarter. Picked up used and was told it was bench tested. Dealer broke the prongs off that holds the brass piece. Got a (supposedly) brand new, in the box bystarter. Done with dealer.

It is a new air filter. No charge for oil on the bill so can't tell ya what kind they used. Did charge me 1/2 hr to change oil and replace plug. There wasn't any oil in it!!

add on top of that they didn't oil the filter. solved that issue before i messed with it. i did some tinkering and borrowed my buddies known good bystarter, and it starter perfectly when cold and when warm, so i just need to get one to throw in there. anyone got a known good used bystarter they would be willing to sell?

i bought the one that Bear sent me the link. "Brand new, in the original box". That's the one that's dead. Figure I can't send it back. Tossed the box cuz I thought the part was good. Bought a used one locally and the dealer broke it.

How do i know that I'm getting a good one off ebay? Been watching but I think Bear said it can only be from an 87 se50. Is that correct or will one off another model work? if so, which models?

Dealer said $70 but they can't get it.

Killer, let's not do the dealer. if you need the bike out of your way, you know where to bring it. Just let me know when.

I've bought 3 bystarters from this guy and they all work (I tested them so if there was a problem I could solve it thru flea-bay.
