SE50P Variator Purchase

Post by countmcnugget »

Hello,

I'm looking to deregulate my 1987 Honda Elite SE50P like a lot of other people and have researched some variators. The pollini variator looks like it comes with a ramp plate. It is more than the Keli variator but the ramp plate would be huge for me as I've had no luck locating one. I tried to order just a ramp plate off of Babbit's Online only to find out it is discontinued after waiting for a week. Any assistance on whether the Pollini variator would be a good buy for the 1987 Elite SE50P? Thanks in advance for any guidance! This forum has been amazing for a noob like me!

Greetings:

The Polini for SE/05 should come with a pulley boss that replaces your stock one. It is an excellent choice, possibly the best one out there. There are cheaper choices, but none much/any better.

Keep in mind that you will:
A: have to use your stock drive boss from your stock variator for it to fit.
B: you will very possibly have to dremel out the casework by the starter to allow it to fit. Not hard, just takes a little time and patience.

The Pollini rollers I got with the variator are I believe 6.9 or 6.3 grams is that okay to use in the 1987 SE50P or should I purchase some heavier rollers?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Greetings:

IF the stock rollers were 10s, then a jump down to 6.9 is huge. Changes of no more than a half-gram (3 grams total)at a time are done so you don't "overshoot" the ideal. I'd try all 9s first and see if the engine "bites" into its powerband. I fear with 6-somethings, it'll just rev to the moon and not really get down the road. Try the 6es if that's all you've got and see?

So i tried the 9's and no luck my leovince sp3 came in from germany yesterday so wanted to see how she'd do. Also wanted to make sure i hadnt screwed anything else up with the variator so i put the old restricted one on and the pipe. She moved again! But i only hit about 20 mph im goin backwards haha. Picked up some 10 gram rollers today hope it helps.

That leovince pipe has a restrictor welded in the head pipe........You need to remove it to get the most out of it.

Alright got the 10 grams in and ran it with the sp3 and pollini variator. Pulling 26 still. I am thinking the next step will be to get a new belt not sure how old the current one is, cleaning the carb which will be very interesting haha (not to mechanically handy) but i guess i gotta learn somehow and derestrict this sp3.

Wish me luck!
Any words of wisdom greatly appreciated.

The belt width is more important than its age. When I swapped the Polini variator with Polini weights in my stock Iowa se50, it would max out at 30mph, up from the stock 25mph.
