changed gear oil now electric start clanks!! (94 SR)

so i decided to change the gear oil yesterday and now the electric start makes a clanking sound. the gear oil was so old that it came out white/greyish. any ideas on the clanking im afraid to ride it now D:

Mine did the same thing when I got it, I opened the side case and it was covered in rubber dust from the belt. I think the lack of grease on my starter pinion and all the filth was the ultimate cause of the pinion not mating with the starter gear properly, thus making the CLANK!

Also I drained the gear oil from mine and it was in the same condition, have no idea if the p.o. ever changed it... ever...

also im having a problem with the left crank casse cover coming off..it seems to be so stuck on both of my scooters its not even funny. i took off all 5 bolts. the right side came off just fine but the left is completely stuck like it was super glued and never meant to be removed again or something. any ideas on getting it off?

White gear lube indicates there is water in it. Check the vent and make sure there is a good hose on it.

alright so scratch the fact that i couldn't get the side cover off. it finally came off with a rubber mallet and some prying..where on the pinion exactly do i need to oil it. and bear I'm not sure which hose to check and how do i tell if its bad?

Slather some grease on the pinion gear teeth that mate up with the starter gear on the crankshaft, enough grease to fill between the teeth should be sufficient.

The tube that bear was talking about is located on the rear of the engine coming out of the right side (tire side) of the transmission case. If there is no tube, get one as water could enter the case rather easily without it.

Heat, pb blast, rubber mallot, strength, and lots of patience should get the cover off.

Bend it and check for cracking/dryrot.

clean the belt dust off the starter gears, replace the belt, weights, ramp guides.
