(ed: 86 Spree, starts and dies) Please Help!

Post by Mcleczi »

Ok so here's the deal, I found a 1986 Honda Spree the other day and I am trying to make it work. I have a few questions for you guys cause you seem like you know pretty much everything about these things. First of all it was running well yesterday for awhile and then I put it away to go do something else, a few hours later I tried starting it and it just would not work. It would start, idle and then shut off. It did this for a few minutes and now won't start at all. I believe I have tried everything short of taking the engine apart. I have cleaned the carb 3 times, I have inspected all the hoses for cloges, I have checked the spark plug, I have changed the gas, and I have checked the engine to make sure it isn't full of oil. None of this worked... Doesn't anybody know what else I can to or what I am doing wrong?

Another side question... How could I get the idle/pilot jet out of the carb to clean it? I can't get it out....

Thanks

The only jet you can take out on the spree is the main jet if I'm not mistaken. Try tinkering and tuning with the air mixture and idle scre*ws.

Thanks, darn I was hoping I could cause its clogged and I don't know how else to get it unclogged. I tried a wire, a twist tie, air and carb cleaner. Help? Anyone?

check compression. If you have fuel then you need air, also you can check spark. With those three things the bike should start.

Make sure when you are starting it cold that you do not twist the throttle and the air cleaner is on and tight to the throat of the carb. If you read the manual it has a section on the fuel system. Try starting with the air/fuel screw turned out 2 turns and then adjust for highest rpm. Set the idle at 1800 + or - 100 rpm.

Prime it with some 31 to 1 gas and oil mix, if it fires your carb is still and issue.

Use bear's advice and prime with the 30:1 mix. If it fires off then make sure the fuel line and the vacuum lines are right. If the petcock is not getting vacuum or toast or the screen is clogged in the tank or clogged fuel line the carb wont get fuel. apply vacuum to the vacuum side of the petcock and see if fuel comes out of the fuel line. If it ran for a bit and then died it kind of sounds like the float bowl was full and ran dry and didnt get any more fuel. Or the float valve is stuck not letting fuel into the carb, and... and...
