help!-2000 Honda Elite SR chugging after 1 month winter sit.

Post by okrueger183 »

Hey everyone,

This is my first post on the forum and hopefully somebody has an idea as to what's up with my Honda moped (2000 Elite SR with 2500 miles-In good shape), or that maybe the problem will subside on its own.

My moped had sat for approx 1 month over winter break (I'm a college student) in Madison, WI in cold temps. I had put some stabil in fresh fuel before I left and it had been running like a champ the last time I used it 1 month earlier. When I got back and tried to start it, it took a long time to pop. Eventually after flooding it hard, then letting it sit and re-trying, it turned over and ran just fine AT FIRST. I let it idle and revved it for approx 10 min, then rode it. The first 1 mile trip it ran fine. The next trip it made it about 400 yds where it slowly bogged down and quit. It refused to start for 15 min, where it then started and limped home about 1 mile, chugging alot and not responding to full throttle, only half, and no more. I got home, put a little HEAT in it, revved the crap out of it and figured maybe the fuel wasn't yet reaching the motor smoothly after such a sit. The next day I rode it around the block for atleast 1 mile, stopping and letting it sit, then running it hard, making sure it was warm and such and it ran perfect the rest of the day. The next day however, after about 1/2 mile of running smooth, at near full throttle it began to slowly bog down and go no more than 15 mph. I immediately pulled over and put it on the stand to rev it for a bit, and it ran fine the next 1/2 mile of the trip. Its been 3 days and I've put around 3-4 miles on it in this time.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why it is doing this? I let it warm up each time. I have not checked the fuel filter yet. Plug is a cpl years old. I figured by now plenty of fuel should have run through the engine and system to rule out slow fuel feed from sitting.

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks

I'll try that. Sounds like it could do the trick with how my throttle has been acting up when I give it more gas.

Greetings:

A dose of fresh fuel may help, but Diagnosis may require the Actual Turning of a Screw. In addition to the new spark plug and fuel screen inspection, consider popping the cover off the airbox and a look at the filter element. The foam breaks down and an occasional chunk is vomited into the intake stream where it momentarily blocks a reed from closing.

Use a ngk bp6hs spark plug, also use synthetic 2 stroke oil which will not jel and fresh gas, below 30 degrees just wait till spring.

Alright everybody, thanks for all the advice but the problem still exists..

So far I have:
Changed to synthetic oil
Swapped plugs
Fresh gas
Checked air filter
Removed, cleaned, and inspected the carb

I read somewhere that the automatic chokes on these models could sometimes act up. Anyone know anything about these??

Upon a cold start, the problem isn't bad and doesnt really show until I run in for a solid 300-400 yards. This is consistent almost every time. It's as if it's getting way more fuel and it should be and can't burn it up (lately it has even started backfiring a little when it's at peak problem). It doesn't choke out when I put it up on the stand and rev it, but only when I sit on it and it has to pull a load. Like said, the carb is and was originally quite clean, so I think it must have to do with fuel intake?

Any ideas?? Thanks.

Get us the compression... the guage can be obtained at an auto store for under 30. If it is fine on the stand... you may be getting low.

Pat recently helped someone here with same issue.

If low you may need to hone your cylinder... just depends on the condition.

Please provide that reading for starters.

Best of luck....
I'm more than happy to explain it to you. I'll even draw you a picture! But I can't understand it for you.

Alright, so new updates after the carb cleaning. After running one more time after I thought the carb cleaning failed to fix the problem, the problem is gone (as far as I can tell). I've prob put on around 5 miles since then and there is no sputtering or lack of power. Maybe it just needed the whole system to get some fuel through it.

Hopefully this is the end of the problem!
