1987 SE50 Replacement rings : identical or different?

Post by PhilippeL »

Hello guys,

The rings were replaced on my SE50 some years ago.

My manual says that the upper and lower rings are different and should be identified accordingly (T1, T2). But they are not. Both have a 'N' on the top, and they look the same. Is there really an upper and lower ring?

The only difference I see is that there is a ring spreader under the lower one.

Thanks for your answers.

Yes. If you install the wrong ring in the wrong ring land, you will not be able to get the ring compressed enough to install it.

Ok. Then how do you distinguish them?

I would say do not go by the old rings on the piston now. They sound like someone put the wrong rings in. There really is an upper and lower. They should be labeled T1 and T2 and installed with the marks facing up.

I just saw that the upper cannot go in the lower position because of its height... I am just surprised that they are not labeled T1 and T2, but both 'N'...

Somebody ever bought Honda replacement rings in the original size could confirm?

Thanks for the answers.

I see on the parts list the ring set for the SE50 is labeled (Nippon) for Japan. Is it possible there are other markings on the rings that you have not seen besides the "N"? I needed a magnifying glass to see my marks.

Here are the best pics I could take with a magnifying glass :

I can see better with that, and I see nothing else that a 'N'.

Anybody replaced their rings recently on a AF05?
