Spree sluggish at take off

Post by Duosport »

I think my Spree is becoming more sluggish at take off. Once it gets to 10mph it really takes off. What are the possible issues? Could be belt I suppose but I do not hear the engine reving up as if the belt is slipping.

Welcome to the non-variated spree...
I'm more than happy to explain it to you. I'll even draw you a picture! But I can't understand it for you.

Do you think that is all that it is? I think it is more sluggish at take over now than it was two weeks ago. Could be my imagination though.

My scooter hits 31mph on the speedo. If I had a blocked exhaust would I not have a poor performing engine in general?

I would pull the spark plug, and check the compression just to start...see what it has.
Plug may be fouled enough to compromise low-speed acceleration.
I suspect some rich condition, just a hunch... :urban:

All sprees are sluggish :-P just kidding. How many miles are on it? Does bit get worse the warmer the motor gets, for example its not too bad at the start of the ride but the take off gets progressively worse as the ride goes on? I agree with mike on the compression check. Check it cold and after a long ride when its good and hot and see what numbers you come up with. I'm guessing that you have a high milage spree. As long as the belt is not slipping it won't really cause bad take off as the gear ratio heads to a lower gear so to speak when the belt gets narrower. I'm going to put my money on a really shiny bore and possibly some build up either in the exhaust port or pipe or both.
I would use something like a long screwdriver and poke it in the stinger of the the pipe, and make sure no critters have made a nest in there. Happened to me and others It will run quite rich or not at all depending on how plugged it is. Shiny bore syndrome as I'm calling it now is where the cylinder walls get worn to the point they look like a mirror and then there is no place for the oil to live between the wall and piston/rings. I had the problem and many others too. Easy fix, new base gasket, head gasket, some piston clips and a brake cylinder hone and some time.
