inner clutch nut socket size

Post by Rip_City_Spree »

hey got a newb question need to buy a socket to remove the inner clutch nut on a 01 elite sr. manual says its a 28mm thread size. but been looking around and havent checked with an auto parts store but cant find a 28mm socket. Ive found 27 and 29 not 28. I know its a dumb question and I havent pulled the clutch yet just trying to get things in order to do so this week. thanks in advance.

Oreily will have the socket you need, or a sears hardware. I use the largest size adjustable wrench and the ground.

39mm socket is what I have. Its an axle nut size so easy to get at the auto parts store.

For those out there that dont have proper size socket.

It can also be taking off with a set of water pump pliers. Just catch the lip of the clutch in a vise with nut facing up and loosen the nut.

Not Ideal but it works in a pinch. Or if you dont have other tools.

Hold it with both hands and the adjustable wrench compressed to it as you strike the ground. That will loosen it then put your feet on the top of the clutch as you loosen the nut.
That's the way I've always done it. Pretty easy I think.

Yeah I know it's pretty easy. I like to know I have the right tools before I get into things. And know I'll have them for later use. Since work buys my tools might as well get the right ones for the jobs.

The adjustable wrench works great if you dont have the 39mm socket. :-) I love being able to pull the but off with the impact ;-) I put the but back on with the socket handle though. Its so easy to cross thread that nut

Yeah I'll use a torque wrench to put it back on

You don't need a torque wrench, just can't use an impact. Just ensure you have the clutch seated well and stand on it like I was to remove it, and tighten it by finger until you can do no more, then the same way it was removed by striking the ground with wrench to re tighten fully. You can use a socket and ratchet if you like I just refuse to bash my expensive tools (sk and matco ratchets) on the ground. That adjustable wrench can be bought through harbor freight for a few dollars.

One tip of advice if you do use a socket, grind down the end of it till its completely flush. Otherwise it will slip sometimes because of the chamfer.

hi mr. love.
