Clutch Behaving Badly

Post by CalvinB »

The clutch on my 1986 Spree has been slipping on take offs. I am having a really hard time with hill starts on even the slightest grades. Also starting on the flat and level is really slow. When it was stock the clutch would be locked at about 10 mph and now it slips til about 15 when its cold and 18 when it's hot. When I decelerate, it starts kicking at about 20 til 15 and then it is full disengaged.

I have a BBK and I have done a bit of a pulley mod. But it behaved the same way before the pulley mod. The clutch shoes have plenty of material left and the springs are stock. Would adding weight to the clutch arms hurt or help? I have a 1/4" brass rod and I could drill holes in the arms and bond in a piece of brass to add weight.

Greetings:

MMI is probably right. Examine the clutch while it's off. Sticky pivots?

I agree check the belt and its width against the spec in the manual. And also scuff the clutch friction material on the cluch if there is any left with some 220 grit wet dry paper or emry cloth, then spray down with brake cleaner. Sometimes the driven pulley can get stuck open and the belt will slip. I'd service the driven pulley and get it to open and close nicley.

Its all really clean the belt still has a mm to go so i might replace it. Whats the current thoughts on an Ax24 belt ? Any brand better than others?

I also was giving though to getting the pulleys wpc treated, mostly to satisfy my own curiousity.

I tend to think that WPC treatment on the pulley sheaves would INCREASE belt wear.

The bell can also glaze up a little but mike is prob right. It could be the belt.

My thought was that wpc would increase grip on the belt, like ceramic coatings do, idc about wear

It is definitely the belt. I got my MLM pipe yesterday and when it hits for the second time at about 30, the belt has a lot of trouble keeping up.

Current consensus on the AX24 belts? best brand? should I do it at all?

I went to auto zone with a brand new bando belt and had them measure it out and grab one an inch smaller. Had a better take off, but the top end suffered. not much but it suffered and on the spree that is much, but the take off was enough to where if i bounced the front end it would pull up if I pinned it hard. The belt only lasted me a few hours though, I rode it probably to hard and it got way to hot. I would just go witha little wider and a tad shorter belt and get the measurement if it works good and look into bando, polini, malossi, and other belt brands for that same measurement and order a belt meant for the cvt heat.
