Possible clutch issue?

Post by Lil red s-10 »

Hello bed to the form new to honda sprees

Bought an 86 spree off of craigslist for 50 bucks had compression had no spark
After throughly cleaning the carb and tank and fixing the bent pickup coil it has spark and fuel actually runs quite well for having been sitting for a while. Anyways been running it around town for a while now and can't help but feel like I have a clutch issue.

First start it up and take off it runs good accelerates smooth from 0-33 ish mph but after it fully warms up and you have several blocks on it it starts to accelerate very slow like the clutch springs are week causing them to engage sooner than they should keeping it out of the power band? Is this a fairly common issue? Is there any upgrades ?

Took the cover off and took the clutch off and the belt and de glazed the clutch pads and roughed the edges off the v belt up a little it was getting kind of shiny none of this helped

Greetings:

If the belt is shiny, it may simply be worn out. It's not uncommon in 30-year-old scooters. The clutch springs RETRACT the shoes at idle. The weighted shoes respond to centrifugal force to engage the clutch bell, so weak springs don't explain your symptoms, assuming it can fully engage.

It may be a good idea to make sure the the two halves of the rear driven pulley are actually able to split apart and push back together freely. The pulley is spring loaded and that's what keeps the belt tension constant, sometimes the grease dries up over 30+ years and the pulley halves stick around one spot. So the belt can't keep tension. This would explain a shiny belt. So a driven pulley service might be a good idea. Now my question is when the motor gets up to temp and your take off is slow down do the rpms go up when you twist the throttle and the scooter is slow to take of or is the motor itself slow to take off when it's hot? The first scenario means you have drive train issues, the second scenario points to possible top end and or lean issues or possibility of a bystarter issue. Bystarter could be staying in the start position and you would have a boggy motor at regular operating temps.

the motor/scooter is slow to take off it doesnt rev it stays constant untill about 10 mph then it picks up good doesnt miss or flutter or anything like that it runs good at anything over like 10mph which is what let me to think it was clutch/belt related

I'd look really hard at the intake system. Make sure the airbox is all proper and the filter isn't all rotten and is oiled properly. A slipping clutch would likely chatter a lot on takeoff or the revs would go up while the scooter sat still. Does the take off get worse the more you ride it? Like taking longer to rev up the more you ride? A good idea would be to go through the manual procedure to set the idle air mixture and idle speed. If the idle mixture is lean the take off will be rotten untill just past 1/4 throttle or so

nope it stays the same after the first take off does not get any worse no matter how warm it is just verry sluggish untill around 10/12 mph when it gets up in the rpm a little bit
