Piston ring question
Can anyone tell me what the thin ring is in the picture. When i removed the bottom piston ring this really thin one was underneath it?
Re: Piston ring question
Sorry, i can't get the darn photo to upload.
Re: Piston ring question
Thats a oil spring ring. As the outer ring wear it pushes on it to make sure it gets a good seat and seal. If you brwka in a motor wrong with thise type of spring it helps keeping it seal afterwards. Normally you only see it in motors that produce blowby without them.

Re: Piston ring question
is this thing standard on a spree?
Re: Piston ring question
Yes for the aome of the stock spree top ends it is but any replacement kits do not have them because they are considered inefficient and not really needed with how close machining and boring gets to being perfect. The new kits have a 2 ring domed piston most of the sprees stock ran a dished piston with a oilring. Some changes have come along for the spree that make them more reliable and run longer.
Did the topend give out, why did you take the rings off?

Re: Piston ring question
Yeah, my spree has a domed piston. If i buy new rings do you think i should worry about replacing the oil spring ring?
Re: Piston ring question
not unles the new rings need them, depends on what rings you get. I have never found replacement rings, just piston kits.

Re: Piston ring question
Did you do a compression test before tearing down the top end?
Before you replace the rings make sure to check the gap and also remember to hone the cylinder before you install a new set of ring or piston kit. To check the gap you need a feeler gauge. Don't use those short ones. Use the long feeler gauges. Also check the top and bottom of the piston for gap. I am not sure what the clearance is for that model but you should be able to find it in the manual. Rings for that bike cross over to other models.

Re: Piston ring question
Taz,
I didn't do a compression test as the bike was not running. I'm heading out this weekend to buy a lot of the specialized tools I need to work on this thing.
Jump,
The top end did not give out, I took the piston and top end apart to de-carbon the thing. It was pretty bad.

Jumps,
I have heard from you guys that replacement cylinder kits are crap. Does the same ring true with just a replacement piston?

Re: Piston ring question
Yeah unless you can find a branded one but any spree stock pistons you find are probably garbage unless nos or used. I would not go with used. Taz may be able to get you a piston kit.
