Clean the area completely and find where its seeping from. The gear case is in the rear and holds fluid. Pinpoint the leak, then you can determine a plan for repair.

Find out WHERE the leak is
Determine WHY it leaked there. (bent parts, broken bolts, failed seals, etc)
Then you know WHAT to repair/replace.

Dark blue/black sounds like 2-stroke oil. Also check the lines from oil reservoir to intake.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

Remember, when it comes to leaks... it could be up higher then you think... it may be channeling down from somewhere.

You said you took a spill...usually the oil tank will leak some out and drain down looking suspicious.

Good point...Those oil caps have a small vent hole and are designed to always be in the upright position. Tip them over and they leak. The seal on the oil level sending unit could also be a culprit. The fact that you said the mystery sludge is black/blue has me leaning towards it being 2-stroke oil. Hopefully the road rash isn't bad.
