1990 Elite E leaking oil out of kickstart cover, won't start

Post by Kustomkarma »

I can't get my 1990 Elite E to start. It's also leaking oil/fuel out of the kickstart (left side cover.) The battery turns the engine over with no problem, the kickstart is free and works, I have spark, rebuilt the carb carefully, tested compresssion (130 lbs), and have the airbox and exhaust installed.

I did some reading and am getting the feeling the crankcase is full of oil/fuel. When I acquired the Elite it had been sitting for about 3 years and was leaking blue oil out of the left side cover. The two stroke oil I'm using is clear / gold so I'm assuming the stuff leaking out has been in there for awhile. So far this thing hasn't even tried to start. Not a pop, growl, or anything. I pulled the kickstart cover off and there's blue fuel / oil puddled all over the bottom edge of the crankcase.

I'm thinking of pulling the engine, removing the intake and reeds and trying to see if anything drains out. Am I on the right path here or should I try something else?

The blue goop could be two things...2t oil (the cheap Generic stuff is blue usually) or its gear oil from the transmission (rear). The main question is not "what is it?" more like "where is it coming from?"....

Things to check:
Oil seal at the crankshaft
Oil seal at the transmission...or the tranny cover gasket has let go and is seeping
Leaking from above, carb, oil line to carb, intake, etc.....and its dripping on top of your belt cover (outside) and finding its way in.

Ive heard of people removing the oil pump and tipping the bike over to dump the extra oil out. Ive never had an oil problem so its just what I read. Maybe remove the gas tank for doing this? Who knows. Hope I never have to.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

It's coming from somewhere near the front of the engine as the kickstart gear attached to the drive face and the starter gears are completely wet with this stuff. It smells strongly of fuel. For now I have drained all the gas and oil out of the tanks while I debate what to do next.

Check all the fuel line for cracks or splits - over time they tend to become brittle and can develop leaks. It sounds to me like you have a worn out or dried up crankshaft seal. That's my guess. Does the motor make any noise when it's running? Is the crank wobbly and vibrate while it's running? Does the crank have any play in it on the variator side? Could be time to replace those bearings then. It's 27 yrs old.

I was wondering about the crankshaft seal. I have never had it running. It doesn't even try to start. Everything moves freely and looks really clean even inside the kickstart case cover. I've checked all the usual stuff: spark, compression is 130, rebuilt carb, tank is clean, lines look good, exhaust is installed, airbox is installed. and everything appears to be good. I'm baffled.

That looks like the thing! There are so many different part numbers I wanted someone else to take a look too before I order anything else. I keep spending money on this thing and It doesn't even have a title. I was hoping to get it going then sell it, but I keep having to fix things. :(

I'm not even trying to flip it for profit lol. I'm just trying to get my money back out of it and reclaim some space in my shed.
