when driving with moderate throttle, the engine sputters. If I increase throttle, the engine runs smoothly until I back off the throttle again, then I get the sputtering again

Start with the simple things.Did you try a new plug or loose plug cap?Check air filter?Check for air leaks around the carb. insulator.Good luck

Do a plug chop.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

clean out carb, and dont I mean squirting it with carb cleaner hehe!
