ignition pickup coil ground wire????

Post by gadgetman »

I have installed an 84 motor into my 86 frame and have run into a problem. The 84 has 2 wires on the pickup coil and the 86 has only 1, the extra seems to be a ground by looking at diagrams. Can I use this set up and just ground this wire to frame?? Or do I need to replace parts and if so what?? I do not have 86 motor or parts from it. Please help I am trying to get this going before memorial weekend. Thanks gadgetman

Someone has to have run into this before. I don't want to mount engine until I am sure grounding wire to engine or frame will work. Please any input will be appreciated, thanks

"Ground is ground", if on the 84 both wires are ground then there is no issue.

I don't see any wiring differences for the 2 model years in the service manual online. It may just reflect a manufacturing and/or vendor change. As far as I know the engines for 84-87 are all interchangeable with no wiring/electronic differences EDIT: As it relates to the coil wiring to ground.

imo, if the second wire IS a ground wire, there should be no problem grounding it to the chasis.
projects galore :nerd:
