My 1983 Aero Project Restore...UPDATE! Pics are up!

Post by elnene2k »

OK,
So I bought my 83 Aero pretty beat up with 6,xxx miles...Needs most body panels and tachometer...Also needs a key which I have pulled the ignition cylinder off to make one...Right now, it sits with some parts pulled off...Just trying to do major cleaning as it looks like it was sitting outside for a while...Although I do not know whether I need these or not, I went online today and bought some engine parts just to spruce it up a bit...Here's what I got...

Drive Belt

Mfg Product Number: 17205-GE8-000
Description: ELEMENT, AIR CLEANER

Mfg Product Number: 13115-147-000
Description: CLIP (10MM)

Mfg Product Number: 061A1-GE8-406
Description: GASKET KIT

Anything else you guys think I need for the engine?

UPDATE: Here are some pics!

Is the needle bad? If not, you don't need the needle set. So long as your going to be rebuilding this pig, you might as well throw a new set of rings in there too.

Crap...So now that I've got most of my body parts ordered, I've been working on cleaning up the bike/engine. Got a key, got a battery and now, when pushing the start button I hear a click coming from the relay...I think the relay itself is good, I think my starter may be bad...well, the bad part about it, now that I got the pieces off to get to the starter, I find out there is a crack on the metal behind the fan cover...A decent sized one...Anyways, I will soon take pics of my progress and post them here...

Another problem! While taking off the starter motor, the thing freaking bakes on me and now one of the screw tabs is gone! This $50 scoot is becoming more like a $400 one...We'll see what else happens...

pretty funny that you're missing almost the entire body, yet your cover on the wheel appears to be immaculate.

hopefully it doesn't turn into 400 bucks, but at least you didn't start out at 200 and then have to drop another 400

Got my first body panel painted...Still have to wetsand and apply clear coat...

BTW: After reading alot on here about diff paints, I decided to just go out and get a good plastic self adhesive primer, cheap walmart .97 cent paint and good automotive high heat primer...I figure as long as your primer and clear coat are the good kind, that's really what matters most, right?

that looks good. I was thinking about painting my Aero 50 mostly white with accents, but I wasn't sure if I'd like it. Keep the pics updated!

Yeah,
I'm most like going to do all white with keeping the floorboard red and maybe re-upholstering the seat to red...

Yeah. I was worried that my Aero 50 was in bad shape, but after seeing somebody take on this project I can see that mine is practically a walk in the park.

OK...
So now I have replaced piston rings, replaced gaskets with new ones around head, port and polished intake header pipe, replaced gaskets on header pipe, replaced belt with new OEM one, replaced gasket on drive cover, replaced spark plug, drained oil and fuel.

Next steps are to

1. replace oil, fuel, and air lines.
2. continue sanding body panels for painting
3. Clean engine case with brake parts cleaner
4. Clean tires/wheels (painting wheels a little later
5. Replace starter motor
6. Fix crack (JB Weld) on fan side

7. try to start it again...

Is this around the muffler mount? If so, I'll take a picture tonight that shows how mine was fixed. I had to have it welded. JB Weld won't hold it (been there done that back around 1991) - there's too much vibration and weight on it.

Well,
It's the piece behind the fan...The front of the muffler screw bolts onto to it...Show me a pic...I'd like to see it

Update!
Got most of the engine put together! Just need to replace the one line that goes from fuel pump over to carb...Very tiniy inlet/outlet and cannot seem to find one like it...Once I find it, i will refill oil and gas and give it a whirl...Replaced started relay and CDI unit so If I can get it started, I will be psyched!
