runs fine on stand, not on ground

Post by tomije87 »

Starts up fine, idles fine, runs full throttle fine on the stand. However, as soon as I put 'er down to ride it, it will either 1) stall or 2) hesitate for 5-10 seconds at very low RPMs before finally kicking it in gear. Same thing after coming to a stop. I've read around and saw a problem or two like this, but no one ever said how they fixed it. I just completely cleaned out the carb and air filter. What's next? I can't imagine it's fuel filter, b/c it idles fine, and once it does start going, she rides like no other. Just a pain getting it going.
Help!

Model? check the two holes in the airbox lid and clean em out. Do a plug chop.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

if it running lean you can always do what i did and put some electrical tape over the air-box intake holes, was the only fix to make mine run.

Turn the air screw out half a turn. It's too lean.

Look at your spark plug, if it's lean your plug could be trashed

I went through a similar situation with my 86 Spree....I ended up cleaning the carb 3 times before it started runnning correct. I think you need to rebuild the carb.

I guess I'll try cleaning the carb and letting it sit over night. Also, I was attempting to ride it today, and as I was riding (just before it stalled for the 4th time) I noticed what sounded like shots of air coming out of the exhaust. Similar to an airsoft gun or something. I checked the plug this morning (didn't have time to do a full plug chop) and it looked pretty good, little dirty around the base, but I cleaned it all up and reinstalled it. I'll try getting a new plug and completely cleaning out the carb. Factory settings for the air screw for '86 is 1.5 turns out correct? Also, I have my needle on the 2nd notch. It was on the first notch, and I moved it to the 2nd thinking it might help, but it obviously didn't.

got everything back together. Carb completely cleaned out, rebuilt, new plug put in, same result. It just does not want to get up and go. What is next on the list?

This isn't really a permanent or perfect fix, but have you tried upping the idle?

My bike, fairly consistently, will idle fine for as long as you leave it, but if you jump on it'll bog down (although mine doesn't usually stall like yours). But if I up the idle speed so that the wheel is spinning a little and then ride it it'll sometimes clear up that problem.

Figuring if that has an effect might help diagnose the problem.

That is an indication that the carb is too lean. Raising the idle just beats up on the clutch.

it sounds like its either way too rich, or way too lean

either way you should be able to diagnose it looking at the plug
