Restoring old spree (Bogging problems)

Post by bigchess »

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the forums as I just got my wife a spree from a friend that needed some work a few weeks ago. It's an 86 spree with and when I bought it it would not start. It would turn over but hardly start.

First thing I did was pull the carb. Cleaned it out then still had the same problems. But I could get it to run just would bog out after taking it off the stand. Plus it had an air leak. It would rev just whenever it wanted to. One of the carb. bolts were stripped so it would not tighten right.

So now last night I put on a new petcock and fuel filter, Carb, cleaned the oil tank and filter in the oil tank. Filled with yamalube 2S (my oil for my new yamaha zuma ;) ) (they had some green stuff in there last time.) I also have a new air filter properly oiled. Along with all new gaskets from the reed valve to the carb.

Now it starts but when I give it over 1/2 throttle it bogs down. (Smoke from the exhaust does become visible)

Im on my way to the store to pick up NGK spark plugs over the auto lites I have. See if that helps. Also I did loosened the exhaust and seems like it idled better but did not fix the top end bog.

My compression is about 115psi and I'm kinda stuck on what to do.

Thanks

Here are a few things for you to do for free.
I would clean out that muffler. Either by chemical soaking or fire/torch method. Both can be found here:

Definitely check the plug and compare it to this chart:

Also I would check the bystarter and see if it is functioning properly

Even try cleaning the fuel tank:

Did you fix the carb? If not, there's an air leak and it will bog. You'll have to get that stripped hole fixed.

yeah everything is new. If I take my exhaust off and try it will it hurt the engine? Also it smokes a lot when full throttle. Idles great. I replaced the oil pump with another certified used one and same results. Any suggestions??

Thanks

Clean the exhaust the best you can. Also check the exhaust port on the cylinder for blockage.

It will act like a insect fogger on the stand, on the road under load(when that oil is needed) it wont be so bad.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

Okay today I went out and took off the exhaust and ran it. Same results. Idles great but as soon as I get over half throttle it's like Im hitting the kill switch. Instant dying sound from motor. So I undid the air box. Held my finger like an inch back and still a lot of smoke but it does rev all the way up. How can I richen it up some?

Another update. I fixed my problem. The heat conductor between the carb and reed block was upside down. Therefore it did not seal right. Creating more air than needed at higher rpms. Now I got it running well but will not go over 15. It has no power basically. I loosened the exhaust and same results. Any suggestions?
