i just finished my SA50 "DIO" mini-stroker / Corsa swap into my 1985 Aero 50. (i know, not the same engine but seems like everyone refers an SA50 engine to a DIO engine...)
it should be a fairly quick and reliable engine.
-i started out with ALL new Honda OEM bottom-end parts like the cases, certain transmission components, bearings, flywheel, hardware, fan shrouds, etc.
-it's been waay too cold to test and tune so i can't report on the performance, but it looks beautiful!!
if i ever learn how to post pics or set up a picture hosting account, i will post some pics.
long-live the NB50!

Numbskull Nomenclature
Greetings:
Boy it's easy to get confused.
The Sprees and early Aeros ('83-84) (mostly) shared engines, but the Aeros sprouted variators. The later ('85-'87) NB50 Aeros shared their engines with the early Elite SE50s (except for the 2-bolt intake mani in the '85 and the lack of a throttle-controlled oil pump on that model year... Oh, don't forget ! no kickstart that year either). Then for no apparent reason Honda-san rebadged the Elites as SA50s but kept most of the running gear the same until 1994, when the new "real" SA50 engines bowed...

tries to make sense of all this and succeeds to some degree by defining the engine series bolted up to these various scooter styles. AF05E for Aeros and earlier Elites, AF16E is the post-1994 Elite and early DIO, and the latest DIOs appear to house AF18E powerplants. The differences in composition can be found in digging into the part numbers of the various models/years but it is tedious and fraught with potential error. OEM parts sellers have these on their sites and I've found them useful to a point.
Obviously the reason for all of this is Honda's frugal nature. No sense redesigning an entire engine when certain proven parts can be carried over to the next generation, saving engineering and tooling costs. Model designations NB50 SE50 SA50 refer to Style. Engine codes AF**E determine Substance. Brand names like Aero, Vision, Lead, Elite, and Dio are pure marketing - the name fits the particular country's tastes. It's only a problem for us, when we want to mix'n'match parts from different years into one running scoot.
Aside from the stuff mentioned above, differences include bearing/shaft diameters and lengths, Crank stroke - that's an important one right there... - intake port dimensions, cylinder stud spacing, Exhaust port orientation and size... it goes on and on. If you know which engine you have, there's a better chance that stuff from different years will fit. But not always...
Express to late DIOs: All 50 ccs, five generations with steps in between, worlds apart
