spree runs fast on kickstand by itself: normal? carb?
Hey y'all. I got an 86 spree. It starts and runs fine, but I can't get the throttle to go without starting to cut-off. Got a new air filter.
I have it on the kickstand running and the wheel starts to run fast by itself and stays at high speeds until I twist the throttle, then it wants to turn off.
I am thinking it's carb issues? Tried seafoam to clean out gunk, got smokey for a minute. I was trying to avoid taking carb off but maybe I should.
Any thoughts?

What you describe sounds like a lean condition: Racing under light load, no power when you give it gas. I don't have enough experience with the Spree to give you definite advice, but unless someone else has a better idea, yeah, a thorough cleaning of your carburetor seems necessary.

If you don't align the slide on the throttle with that rubber bump, the throttle will stick open and the engine will race even if you don't turn the throttle . I'm not sure that's your problem but it's something to verify. I've done it

Checked both. I used the factory setting for air screw, just needed to adjust it.bradthreee wrote:adjust the idle scew on the carb
But I have a prob with it running with the throttle open, wants to bog after a twist.
I have covered the air suction with my fingers and it runs at full throttle.
What's the deal?

So you're not running with an air filter? Is there a tube connecting the air box to the carb?

I bought a new filter and it's connected to the carb. I have not replaced the spark plug.

I'd start with a good carb cleaning WITH the guitar string, and that tube behind the jet pushed out. Clean it, then clean it again. Then just before you put it back on, clean it again. Just to rule out "dirty carb".
The first thing I do when I start on an unknown-running bike is change air filter, drain gas tank/fresh gas, clean carb, new plug, drain/replace oil in tank. Then I KNOW i have all of the essentials ruled out.

Thanks for the help y'all. Got that mug running good after my third carb cleaning, new spark plug and fresh oil change. To other hard-headed noobs... Cleaning the carb very well is the key, I sprayed the pants off that bish and took my time the last go-around. I guess I was too excited to ride when 1st I got it, which only delayed just that. Now I am glad as poo and it feels good to ride, though it's getting a bit chilly.
Thanks again

Scoots require persistence. I believe it was Churchill who said, "never give up, never give up". Actually, he said "never give IN".desperado wrote:Got that mug running good after my third carb cleaning, new spark plug and fresh oil change.
