thanks for the responses!

So i did the test taz suggested to find conclusively that the piston is not hitting the head or the plug.

from a pretty cursory look(the piston is still on the crank), the piston is not hitting the case or crank and not bottoming out. as there is no damage visible.

what is the magneto? inside the crankcase? i am 99% sure nothing has fallen in and have everything accounted for...

as for another location for the offending tapping, it is certainly coming from the crank case.

any ideas?

The magneto is behind the fan.You will need a puller to get the mag off.

i suppose it is possible something got in there. would it produce a tapping though? and could this theoretically damage anything if unchecked? i wish a had made a recording before i took the head off.

Its possible since there are magnets inside the flywheel.

first off the head gasket can be reused. no problem there.
are you certain that the piston isn't hitting either the edges of the combustion chamber or the spark plug tip?

did you loosen the cyl/head bolts and kick it over with the sparkplug in place?you'd want to loosen the studs and then ever so slightly re-seat them to the the head with just the 10mm socket in hand but not tight. just touching.do the same with the spark plug.

I doudt it is the woodie key on the magnito. He probally didnt pull it. No reason to pull it to install a cylinder kit.. I have one question. Is the tick consistently timed? Does the tick tick tick go faster when the throttle is applied? I hope nothin got in you magnito. It could tear it up. When you spin the crank by hand can you feel and hear the tick? How does your crankshaft turn? I wish I was there to help yah. How does the piston look? I dont think it is the bearings because bearings in honda usually just get a grinding sound when they go out. I am curious as * to find what is making this sound.

Check for conrod bearing play.

no i never pulled the mag and im pretty sure nothing got in it.

and no i do not hear anything when turning by hand.

but i did f up the piston with some ham-handedness, so i guess ill be ordering a new one. and new rings... same hands.

i dont think i was testing to see if the piston was hitting the head/spark in the most optimal way, so when i get in the parts ill retry this.

thanks for the responses, ill post when findings are... found.

speaking of optimal way. do you think that degreeing the spark plug helps? and if so when do you get the washers to do so.

So, How does it run now??? :nervous: I just bought the kit from Taz too and want to get ready for it. :D I understand you take 0.20 off the head? And need to upjet with the stock box? I have an extra head I'm gonna Let the machine shop at work take a crack at. :naughty: Anything I should know? :2thumbs:

i finally got around to installing a new piston and boom: tickticktick on every revolution. looking at the old piston i see no signs of damage. but there is a little wear on the sides of the piston, unrelated? but there is a ticking definitely coming from the case, that occurs at every revolution(increases w/ throttle). i'll poke around and make recording to post. suggestions????

here's a vid, listen for ticking/tapping over engine. it is definitely coming from the cylinder.

Greetings:

Couldn't hear much from the video, but nice and clean!

Reciprocating parts can develop slop or be made with it built in. Assuming the piston crown isn't hitting the head gasket, the top-end wrist pin bearing as well as the big-end at the crank would be good to inspect. If they're tight - as in undetectable up-down movement, then piston slap might be the culprit. I recommend you pull the engine apart to check it out... Again, Sorry.
