Ok, since I'm an apparent newb, I have an appt with a local bike shop to look at it tonight. Hopefully its something easy that I'm overlooking, and it won't cost much.
Here's my setup:

AF18E with 72cc malossi alum bore
28mm oko carb (don't know jets)
PG Long
Carbon fiber reeds
CT Mani
Uni air filter
32:1 premix

Greetings:

Whaddya mean, "don't know jets"? They were there in your admirably greasy hands a few posts up yonder. I can almost read the Pilot - for sure it's a Gin-You-Whine Keihin. With that setup the Pilot should be around a 52-58. If it's much smaller than that, it could explain why it needs choke.

Try 58 pilot and 132 main. That was my setup with the malossi cast iron 72. My clip was in the center position on needle. That should be a good point to tune it from.

Looks as though I didn't take it apart enough, the mech said there was a small piece of dirt clogging the jet. Runs like a top now! Whoo hoo!

for future refence to find an air leak spray brake or carb cleaner around the intake manifold, one area at a time. If you mtoor dies/ idle speed drops alot there is where your leak is.
