SHE LIVES!: Break in q's

Re: SHE LIVES!: Break in q's
My beloved red spree had an audible "death rattle" for over two thousand miles, and only recently did it leave me stranded. My rattle was from loose crankcase bearings, which are now sloppy enough to wiggle my crank by hand.
Remember also, just because it sounds like it's coming from one spot, unless you use a stethoscope to listen, you CANNOT pinpoint the problem as vibrations move through the case, manifesting sounds in spots other than their origins.

Re: SHE LIVES!: Break in q's
thanks for the replies. i will check the bearings, i do recall some definite lateral play of the crankshaft. is there a recognized maximum amount of play the crankshaft can have? if this is the cause, and right now it is the leading idea, is there any harm in running with them?

Re: SHE LIVES!: Break in q's
Greetings:
There is the potential for very extensive damage if the crank bearings are going. The crank ends spin in an ellipse instead of a circle and takes a hammering only so long. If the bearings grenade or spin, they will ovalize their sockets and ruin the cases. The shrapnel will take out the shiny new bore, too.
New Honda (NTN) bearings and seals run ~$45 and the work to install. Worth doing ASAP.

Re: SHE LIVES!: Break in q's
back inside: there feels to 2-4mm of lateral play on the shaft. nothing i could detect up/down. so whether or not this is the offending tap, the crankbearings need replacing. s***.

Re: SHE LIVES!: Break in q's
great, thanks for all responses. i tore her down and took the engine of the frame. use this as an excuse to clean everything. ill find a honda shop to do the bearing replacement and post updates. this bike will run by the end of august. i promise!
wheelman: you said about $45 parts and labor?
Tjammz: my head was certainly oriented correctly. i checked the manual just to be sure on original install.

Re: SHE LIVES!: Break in q's
Greetings:
AF16 bearings run about $38 at Deepinnaharta Honda. Seals figure another ten bucks. The installation is not included, and if you have a shop split the cases it'll be a lot more than the parts cost. Maybe an hour if you bring them the stripped cases, but more likely 2. At $75 an hour!
A Tusk crank puller and bearing splitter from HF will probably cost a LOT less... If you're feeling ambitious.

Re: SHE LIVES!: Break in q's
hm.. that changes things. tusk crank puller, huh? then i'd need a press to get them back in and a case splitter to start...? i would rather do the work myself, anyways. do you have preferred tools for the job? tips?

Greetings:
Splitting the cases can be safely done with a steering wheel or harmonic balancer puller from HF. All the HOW-TOs are in Tech Documents. Some are mine, the ones with the good pictures are not.

Re: SHE LIVES!: Break in q's
Yeah, thats a funky video lol. I think its on right though. The "long side" goes away from the shock, which is correct. Seems like the video was shot in mirror mode or something. I had to watch it like 10 times to get oriented correctly.
