hard to start, runs fine hot, dies at idle
I've followed some of the recomended procedures and brought my spree back to life...kind of.
It takes a lot of kick-starting to get it to start, and at first it'll only run for a second. I wait a few seconds, kick it again and it might run a few more. It will inch forward with very little power for 10 feet, the die. 15 minutes of this and it warms up and runs strong--good power and 30mph on flat ground, though uphill it still has very little power. Even after riding 1/2 hour, it will die when I come to a stop. Yesterday it wouldn't fire at all and today it ran for 1 second and no more, but this weekend I rode it 20 miles.
I cleaned the carb as best as I could. I didn't clean the tank, but I looked inside empty and I saw only 1 small spot of rust. I changed the fuel and oil and cleaned the air filter.
I'm not sure if I set the idle and air mix screws properly. Could this be my problem? Could it be a choke problem?
Any suggestions appreciated.

How's your air filter?
Sounds like a dirty idle jet. Clean clean clean.

I cleaned the air filter once. Should I do it again?
I wouldn't be surprised if my carb cleaning was sub-par. I'll work on it some more.
This morning, I went and got some starter fluid and sprayed it in the air intake. Started right up (wouldn't start at all without it) but only ran for 10 seconds. What does this suggest?
thanks

I'm cleaning the carb again. Right now it is soaking. This is the first carb I've cleaned, so I guess I need some technique suggestions.
It all looks very clean except for one tube. Forgive me, I don't know the names of the internal parts. It is the long thin tube right next to the main, fat throat tube. It looks completely blocked.
Any suggestions on unblocking it?

Your idle jet is completely blocked, huh? That's your problem. Try a toothpick and a good soaking in carb cleaner.

i have kinda the same problem . cause with mine sometimes it will start first kick awesome u know but otheres it will take like half an hour . and then it takes about 20 seconds before i can give it ne gas without killing it.then it runs great. but after about 20 minutes of riding it gets angry and the acceleration gets reaaaaaaaallly slow( top spped still fine and engine still revvs so i thnk it migh be transmission/drivtrain issue).also sometimes after ridin it fast downhill it will make the whislty noise ive seen otheres post and just die and not start for like 5 minutes. and when it does start it has this wierd clciky noise for a while.and being a noob i got even MORE problems. right now my gas guage is stuck at full and i dont know how to get it to work, my battery is currently dead but that shouldbe fixed soon could that be why gas guage dont work?
well thanks
