I have also been told that you can leave some Coca-Cola in there and it will work like the acid does to eat the rust. I have never tried it with a gas tank but I have dropped a few rusty nails in a Coke can so I guess it would work and be safer than acid.

i did the same thing as thie link, but used naval jelly. rinse with water till clean, then rinse with acetone to remove the rest of water from tank. let sit over night then coat with tank liner if needed.bradthreee wrote:viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5

Re: How do I clean the rust out of my gas tank
I use to refurbish japanese scooters and the gas tanks would often need to be cleaned. what i did was drained the tank. then sprayed carb cleaner in it, and put a bunch of nuts and bolts in there and then shake the living s*** out of it. That works real well. Then i would spray it out with a water hose and then let it dry overnight. I would use a high pressure air hose to get any left over water in the tank out. easy money.

I did pretty much the same thing as Taz...I removed the gas tank and sprayed an entire bottle of Gunk into it, then took a butt-load of nuts and bolts and threw them in, different shapes and sizes. Make sure you put enough nuts and bolts to create some weight, that way when you shake it up you're creating a good amount of friction, making it easier to remove the crap. I soaked it overnight, going outside to shake it up every hour or two. I didn't rinse with water, I used regular old unleaded gas. Tank looked almost brand new the next day

there is a simpler way.
remove the petcock/fuel gauge bobber/filter tube.
plug the petcock hole with a plastic something or the other.
go to Lowes and buy a gallon of muratic acid.
70/30 mix of the acid and water.prop tank up level.
fill to top but not over.
wait about one hour
flush with water.
o.k.- not THAT simple but a lot less noise....
