SHE LIVES!: Break in q's

Post by SPREEtown »

Just got my 44mm bbk on my spree. after a couple of kicks, she purrs(sounds pretty mean at idle with a uni filter).

now to break it in... whats the procedure?
start it, let it idle(how long[ish] to reach max temp? with no throttle?), kill it, let it cool(how long[ish] for cooldown?)
repeat(around how many cycles, or tanks?)
start varying throttle(while keeping throttle under halfway around) how many cycles or tanks?
take it for a spin while maintaining above precept (how long?)

any help is appreciated!!

btw: im running sb50 reeds, intake, and carb and a uni freeflow. also, throwing a couple capfulls of oil into the tank.

Do the start up and idle about 3-4 times.Let it run till it heats up and cool down to the touch and repeat.after the heat cycles are done, ride around and modulate the throttle and try not to keep a constant throttle no faster than 20 for the spree and try not to full throttle.do that for about 2-3 tank fulls.Oh and check the plug and make sure its not running lean because your running a uni filter.upjet if you have to.

thanks for the tips.
i've heat cycled it a few times now.
it could just be a paranoid me and this doesn't mater at all, but i am hearing a distinct taptaptaptaptaptaptap with every revolution(?), which increases when throttle is applied. its pretty quite but definitely audible. any ideas? does this matter?

thanks!

I sent instructions. but the tap tap sound would make me kinda nervous. Double check to make sure the piston is not smacking the head slightly. Did you get your head re-grooved to fit the 44mm piston? It sounds like the piston is hitting the head to me and that is very serious. Easy to fix.

that was my concern too. but the head was re-grooved by toboggan himself, so i can't see how that could be the case... and ive heat cycled it 7 times now without issue(except the tapping). would this manifest itself in another way? besides breaking? i am tempted to take the head off and have a look..

s***, i almost just made my self look bad. I've never had anyone call me and say they've had that problem, and each person whose heads i've bored has my number. And our machine is computer controlled. So it must be another problem. It's good i have soo much confidence in our work!   :D

when you say squish what exactly are you talking about? the thickness of the head gasket? or what?

so i took off the head to find no damage or signs of wear/tear on the head or piston... so i am at a loss now and it does not appear the piston could strike the head at any point. i guess i will get a new head gasket and try again. any suggestions?

The clearance between the piston and head.

Check the bottom of the piston to see if its hitting either the case or the crank.

doesn't this seem unlikely?

Could it be a rattling sound, perhaps transmission based? Or connected with the engine hanger?

If there is no damage on the top of the piston you should be kewl. But an easy way to test to see if the piston is hitting the head is to loosen the head bolts about a 1/2 inch out. turn the fan blade with your hand and if you see the head push up a bit you will know it is not right. Make sure the plug is out.. It might be something else. A washer or a small metal whatever could have falled into the magnito. I have seen that before. Tick tick tick.

What i ment to say is hitting the case or crank.
Not all cases are cut the same so when you put a aftermarket kit in,some piston skirts touch the case and it sounds like something is rattling because the piston hits every stroke but not all the time.even if the piston skirt is .0015in to long,it will rattle in the case and you will hear it.
