1985 Honda spree drivebelt problems

Post by Jmm9891 »

I purchased a old spree, that sat for 15 years in a basement, with stale fuel in the tank, we got everything going and running great, when one day I went for a drive on it and, had the engine revving and barely moving. The belt only had 100 miles on it and it was worn. Anyone know why this might have happened? thanks

was it an old belt with 100 miles or a new belt with 100 miles, i would say if its old then it needed replacing anyway. if it was new you may need to take a look at the variator adn see if there are flat spots on the rollers or??? do you have trouble spinning the rear wheel when its off the ground? what was your top end speed at wot?

Greetings:

Rubber + gas fumes + Ozone + 25 years of time = deterioration, regardless of actual mileage. Replace and ride.

Brand-New Belt Breakage

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

If the belt was brand-new and it fried in a short time, then either the belt was defective or the conditions inside your belt cavity are doing something to cause excessive wear. It wouldn't be the clutch, because it functions independently of the grip that the pulleys exert on the belt.

Barring obvious corrosion on the drive or driven faces, I would suspect a problem with the spring-loaded rear pulleys first. Those pulleys act to maintain belt tension at the front pulley as well as out back. If the pulleys are seized on the shaft or the spring is weak/broken, the belt would be slipping all the time. This could lead to failure of even a brand-new belt.
