Headlight relay?

Post by Kikwear »

I haven't played with it yet but has anyone tried this? I suppose it would be beneficial to measure the output at the headlight socket but I'm not home right now, just theorizing. Run a wire from the battery and use the old headlight wire to active the relay to put 12V to the headlight. Yay? Nay?

Point would be to increase voltage to the headlight thus producing more light output. I don't believe that this would kill the battery as the light is only on when the scooter engine is running and thus charging the battery. I suppose you could even run the lead off the alternator output if you wanted.

the problem is the scoot doesnt charge much when idleing. thus could kill the batt.

Yes, you could do that. You could also just run a heavier wire within the harness. Check your voltage at the headlight to determine the "voltage drop" from the battery to the headlamp. If it's down in the 10V range you're losing a lot to wire resistance.

How would you add the bulb, are you going to get an aftermarket headlamp? Honda scoots are sealed.

The type of bulb isn't important, the wattage is. I think the stock bulb is 25W. You can play with this a bit, but at some point you'll overwhelm the charging system.

You could probably remove it with a dremel and a diamond bit for glass. You'd want to figure out how you'd mount it first though. Maybe just with some putty expoxy (JB Weld.)
