How's the oil pump when at idle, is oil dribbling out?

... is oil dribbling out the outlet hose, or out the bottom of the pump? If oil is dribbling out of the bottom of the pump, at the gear input, that would be filling your lower chamber with oil, which would then get pumped up top. That would also explain why it's cranking hard; the piston is trying to compress the oil at the bottomend.

Remove and check the oil pump assembly. The inner 'O' ring may be shot. Only takes a short time to check and that sounds like the logical place to start.
