What bot :)

MW: Not sure on the bearings. If the Honda microfiche show only the drive side's different, then I'd go with that. I just remember they're not compatible.

On the rear plastics: 84-86 are the same material and design, only the stickers changed. They're the hard material.
1987 uses the same soft material for the sidepanels as the leg shield. Design is different on the '87. It has a unique rear tail light that integrates the turn signals. And it has an integral petcock cover. Unique rear rack too. The '87 panels are bolt-up compatible to older frames, but require all these parts to look correct.

'87 also had unique front signal lights, as I recall, and I think the glovebox was standard (not 100% on this.)

The speedo and housing was different as well, I think... more rounded like the SB50. Not 100% sure on this either.

The '87's got a bunch of odd stuff with the body.

A couple of other things to add:

The 87 uses a special harness for the turn signals that plugs into the main harness and the back of the front turn signals. It is numbered #1 in this diagram.

As for the Speedo on the 87 Spree, it uses the same exact speedo as the 87 Elite non S. The 87 Elite S speedo is a direct plug and play affair into the 87 Spree. Everything matches up perfectly. Here is a pic of one on my 87 Spree:
Image

Another "swapable" part on the 87 Spree and the 87 Elite would be the turn signal lens. They are a direct match. Also forgot to mention that the headsets are the same too

The 86/87 Spree used this gear for the kickstarter that they came equipped with. It will need to be switched over as well when converting an 84/85 to kickstart:

Another thing I noticed is the the 84 Spree has a speedo that has the number 40mph when the others only had to 35:

84/85 also have a different muffler design than the 86/87

Bradmeehan also mentioned that the fan shrouds are different as well as the fans.

The flywheels and the stators were different too. Not sure if that was already mentioned

'85 actually goes to 40, but is numbered on the odds instead of evens.

I'd forgotten about the exhaust. Early, 84/85? was cylindrical, whereas the later one looked more like a rounded box.

Didn't realize the '87 Elite/Spree had the same turn signals. Interesting.

The reason I found out was I had a parts SE50 Elite that had a couple of good turn signals lens and the Spree had a couple of cracks so tried it out and a perfect fit! :thumbwink:

All - lots more good input - thanks!
Have updated the list.

--- Couple things ---
  1. The 87 turn signals is interesting, parts wise. The lens can be swapped from 85-87 Aero, 87 Elite SE, Front signal base from the Elite SE at Bradthree works on the 87, but the back signal base is unique to the Spree.
  2. Integrating the signals on the '87 makes the rear rack different - it no longer needed the mounts. The flywheels and stators are noted, but I don't have the exact compatibility issue nailed down - anyone got input? (Can a matched pair be swapeed between models? Yes/No)
  3. Front plastic compatibility between 84-86 vs 87 is off because of handlebar differences. SB 50 is different there too. So at the least - someone would need to change the bars if swapping all plastic between 84-86 Sprees with an '87.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it has to do with the different diameters of the cranks. The larger diameter cranks have larger hole openings on the stator and flywheel where as the smaller diameter ones have the smaller openings.

And something also tells me that the 87 Elite handlebars may be vary similar to the 87 Spree...Its just a guess tho :?

Bradthree - thanks will note the flywheel ID in the list

The 1987 Elite SE handlebar had different part numbers from the Spree. A look at the parts diagram shows the clamp and base of the bars changed from the 1987 Spree.

The fan shroud is bigger on the '86-'87 Spree than the the '84-'85 Spree. The late fan shroud does not fit onto an early case correctly; it appears that the casting was enlarged on the later engines. The fan on the later Sprees is not only larger, but is visually different. The early fan supports the blades at the flywheel side only and is similar in design to a CH80 Elite fan. The later fan has a support ring joining the fan blades on the housing side. The flywheel on the later Sprees is physically larger and noticably heavier. The taper of the later flywheel prevents it from being mounted on an earlier crankshaft. Aside from the difference in pulser coils (2-wire for early bikes, 1-wire for late bikes), the stator plate appears to be completely interchangable.

Greetings:

From reading here, the carb numbers vary by year but they interchange freely. The Spree carb is quite different from the Aero/Elite carb physically. The bystarter is on the opposite side of the venturi, so an Aero carb can foul the shock. Even though they might fit. I suspect the Spree carbs won't work on the Elite/Aero engines due to a very small pilot orifice - cast-in to the body.
