Bystarter instalation

alright my spree wont start and i know its cause the bystarter by not exactly what part of it. i need to know how it is installed.so when u pu the little brass cylynder in does the flat part in the middle go facing up so its almost at the top. or the other way. and does the pin/spring go on the other side of the brass cylynder and the spring comes through or does this pin just go in there? and how freely should the cylynder move?

there should be a black part (it shows the bystarter in the manual & how to install it) on top of the brass thing...if urs doesnt have that the i think something might be missing....

hi all! n00b! anyway, what i think he is trying to say is: upon disassembly of the carb and taking off the auto bystarter, the pieces have a tendency to explode all over the place. he (as do i) wants to know how the bystarter is assembled. there are 4 pieces to the bystarter; the black piece, the spring, the brass cylinder and the needle. does anyone have an exploded view of the bystarter? it's not in the FSM....

I'd like to see this too, for the FAQ. I've never had a bystarter come apart on me.

Hi,

Ok, here is my tutorial on how to put a by-starter back together. If you look at this picture [img=http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/6827 ... 5aj.th.jpg] , you can see an exploded view of the by-starter. It's actually quite simple to put together once you know what part goes where. First, push the small silver rod(notch side first)into the hole on the golden looking piece with the o-ring in the middle and the spring attached to it. Then, push the bigger spring over the top of the small black cylindrical piece with the small needle valve piece on it. After that, push the two pieces together as shown in this picture [img=http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/7237 ... 3zz.th.jpg] . Once that's done, place the very small metal-like disc piece inside the top plastic assembly(with the two wire leads attached to it) as shown here [img=http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/2716 ... 0jx.th.jpg] . Then, place that middle assembly you just put together inside the bottom round plastic piece (with the threads on the outer rim) as shown here [img=http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/6324 ... 4cc.th.jpg] .

All you have to do now is push that bottom assembly up into the top assembly, being careful the metal disc doesn't fall out or the springs pop lose. While pushing the two assembelies together, screw the bottom piece into the top one as shown here [img=http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/8859 ... 6uk.th.jpg] , and keep screwing in until you come to this point here [img=http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/9650 ... 7gn.th.jpg] . Now that it is complete, push it back on the carb, screw on the clamp, and try it out! One way to test it before you install it on the bike; hold the yellow lead on the positive terminal and the green lead on the negative terminal of the spree's battery. It is better if you do this carefully with some alligator clips, but if you are patient, you should(very slowly) see the needle valve move outwards as long as you hold it there(to an extent of course). If it moves, you know it's operating good; if it doesn't, then either you didn't install it correctly, or you need a new by-starter.

the part that i'm having trouble with is the needle assembly. your pics helped me out though. i think i may be missing a spring.....

Well thank you for the complement Ryan, I just wish I was a moderator so I could post it in the FAQ section. Then people could more easily access it and benefit from it's info, although anyone should be able to just do a search on by-starters and find it.

Thankfully, I had gotten a few older by-starters awhile back in a carb parts lot, so I decided to experiment on them first to get an idea on how they work. And in doing that, I also found out how to replace those often troublesome wires, which also saved me from having to buy another by-starter. If you or anyone else would like to know how to do this, let me know and I'll fill you in on how to get those leads replaced without damaging parts on the unit.

I'm just glad that some people may benefit from my "exploded diagram" post, and possibly not have to spend money on a new by-starter. That was probably one of the reasons I was so determined to get one of those things apart in the first place...

Thank you noiseguy, I'm glad that you got them working. It takes a little longer to load the pictures, but it looks better than the links did for sure. To me(at the time), the disassembly and reassembly of the by-starter was just an experiment, but now, it's one more thing to add to the FAQ of this already great forum. One more thing to keep fellow spree enthusiasts out of the shop(except for upgrades

) and on the road...
