Razz CDI vs Spree CDI
Does any one know if these parts could interchange? There are five wires on both.

Re: Razz CDI vs Spree CDI
I have a broken razz and I think the cdi is the cause.
I have lots of spree cdi's but no razz cdi to swap.

Re: Razz CDI vs Spree CDI
Check the test procedure for both in their respective manuals. If the numbers are the same for each test, you are god to go.

I have not checked for pin compatibility with the Spree CDI, but the schematic diagram is roughly similar. However, there's lots of design latitude possible within the coils, as well as polarity and amplitude of the pulses. We have scope photos for a Honda CDI, it would be good to see a working Razz before making a substitution. Isn't that Vantage Pro you have just the tool to record and compare waveforms?

If I use the vantage on this project, I will take pics for you.

Re: Razz CDI vs Spree CDI
I have been doing a lot of research on CDI ignition lately, what I understand is that an engine using a pulse coil to trigger a CDI box (which is basically just a transistor (switch) and capacitor) are pretty much all the same, assuming it is a 2 cycle without a spark advance/retard (most are) or a 4 cycle that has a mechanical advance or retard built in (most dirtbikes up through mid-80's). Many people are using GM HEI advance units from the 70's rewired to trigger engines that CDI boxes are NLA or too expensive to source. Newer CDI boxes may have a circuit built in to retard the ignition to make it easier to start, and advance the ignition at high RPM for max power. I don't believe these little 2cycle motors have any of that. In short, I think you can interchange them, you need to know the ground, pulse/trigger, stator, coil, and kill switch wires and match them up. Check any of the LIFAN honda-clone wiring diagrams on the net and/or your owners manual to be sure.
Here is a good site I learned a lot from: http://www.btinternet.com/~jhpart/bkns125a.htm
After getting my old dirtbike to run on a Honda Express CDI box, I will never buy another expensive CDI again!

Gungatim - Hi and Welcome! Lot of scooters you have, thanks for the link.
The Razz which is the subject of this thread has a CDI with an advancer. The service manual gives a graph of advance vs rpm. Do you have links for info on advance curves? That's one of the differences I think would be interesting for all.Newer CDI boxes may have a circuit built in to retard the ignition to make it easier to start, and advance the ignition at high RPM for max power. I don't believe these little 2cycle motors have any of that.

Trafficjamz - hey how's the CDI project?
Also does this CDI look like it will fit your Razz? Its from an 80's Yamaha scooter.
