Weird fuel gauge on my Spree.

Post by Dude383 »

When I got my '86 Spree, the fuel gauge was stuck on full. I just accepted the fact that it was broken and learned to live with it. This morning I started it up and the gauge moved to empty, even though there was a small amount of fuel in the tank. I just filled it up after work and now it shows just past half full. Whats going on here? If its not an easy fix I'm not going to worry about it, but it'd be nice to have a working fuel gauge if possible.

Pull out the sender from the tank and see if it moves smoothly.

on my tank that had varnish in it did the same thing. if you pull the sending unit out of the tank, the electrical contacts that the float operate will be covered in gunk. use carb cleaner or brake cleaner to clean the contacts. might be your problem it fixed my issue.

That sounds easy enough. I'll give it a shot some time this week. Thanks!

my 85 does the same thing. Reads about half full when full but does drop to empty like normal. I think I will try pulling the sender and see if I can get mine working better too.
