S pree Exhaust Gasket

Post by catsailor »

Hey,
I was riding my spree trolling the nearby marinas today. As I was riding past a sailmakers loft, i saw a guy rolling a black spree out the garage door. I put on the brakes, and went for a visit. The sailmaker had a customer who left 2 1987 sprees in his loft since 1995. The customer told him that he could have them!!! The black one has 700 miles, and a red one had 6000 miles. Both were cosmetically in amazing condition. The sailmaker had never even tried to start them. I tried to barter with him for one of them based on me helping get the other running. With the same gas that had been in tank since 1995, after 2 kicks, the black one started right up. The barter idea went down the tubes. (Interesting side note, both bikes had no electric starters, just kick starters).

The one thing I noticed is how amazingly quiet these things both were compared to mine. Almost couldnt hear them at wot while riding. Both did 25 on the speedo on 15 year old gas etc. I noticed when we pulled off the plastics, that both had exhaust gaskets. There has never been one on mine since I have had it. I do have a bbk on it, so i would imagine that it would be a little louder, but the noise difference was amazing. Are there exhaust gaskets on sprees? If so, what material should I purchase to cut one for mine. Besides a hopeful gain in "quietness" what else should I expect once I install? Could it cause any problems? Require and adjustments?

Thanks for your input.

I just bought a brandnew one and they're about 1/8th of an inch thick and appears to be aluminum w/an asbestos type face on both sides. they're like 5 bucks.

No kick starter means they are 1984 or 1985 models and not 1987, since all 1986 and 87s have both electric and kicker.

There were kick starters. There were no electric starters. We took the cover off of one of them, and the starter was not there. More interested in what to expect, and how to fabricate an exhaust gasket. Local Honda dealer went out of business about 3 months ago, and the nearest is about 1.5 hrs away. Anyone here have one to part with cheap?

All Sprees came with electric start. Someone had to have removed it.

Honda only charges $5.16 for the exhaust gasket.

GASKET, EX. PIPE 18292-GY1-610 (replaces 18291-147-000) $5.16

My dealer will let you order on line then give you the option of picking it up or having it shipped to you. And they have an on-line parts fiche so you get the right part number.

I remember someone saying you could use a VW exhaust gasket but I will stick with the real thing.

once I locate the gasket, and put it on, what should I expect? Will i need to re-tune? Will there be more power?

Less power cause it will be more restricted.
