Difference between pulse generator and alternator exciter?

Post by Kikwear »

Do both tell the CDI when to fire? I have some work today after school to do on this thing. My pulse generator is within ohm spec but my red/blk exciter wire is open. Gonna pull the wheel to see if there are any wire breaks or whatnot. I was just wondering what each individual "sensor" does in relation to running the machine.

Did I answer my own question?

...or if the "exciter" wire is disconnected, no priming current reaches the alternator field windings and so the alternator will not generate any power.

Pulse generators can either be internal circuits or pieces of electronic test equipment used to generate pulses (electronic impulses). These pulses can then be injected into a device under test and used as a stimulus for a clock signal or ignition system...

Meaning the exciter works the alternator and the pulse generator tells the CDI when to fire the plug? Would my bad exciter connection fault the alternator and in turn provide no power to the CDI/coil? Is the exciter wire the "field voltage" wire?
