'83 Aero Choke HELP!!

Post by RZRob »

My '83 Aero 50 is beautiful. It runs fantastic and has less than 1000 miles. The only problem is the darn choke. I bought a carb from an '84 and it's different.

Anyone got any ideas how I can solve this? I've meticulously cleaned the carb including the bowl orifices.

I'm thinking I need to retrofit a different carb, but don't want to make the same mistake again. My '84 Spree is perfect but the carb, while similar is not the same.

The 1983 and 1984 carbs and bystarters are identical, so someone lied to you if it is different. The number on the carb should be PA05A. Oh and the bystarter should be the screw-in style, if it is held with a clip the it is the wrong carb.

Oh this is interesting. The only thing the same of the carbs is the float. The castings are completely different and one screws in via a big ring nut and one's held in by 2 small screws(wrong one I just bought online (eBay listed for an '84).

The carb in my '83 is PERFECT. The problem is the Bystarter is BAD. If it's hot out, I'm fine, but if it's cold I have to catch it when it initially starts and keep it running until it gets past this issue (10 minutes or more) and it wants to die. If I keep it running and ride it I'm fine.

Frankly my '84 Spree shows similar tendencies but always starts and idles. Just once in awhile it gets buggy.

Appreciate any ideas.

Did you try adjusting the air screw (idle mixture screw) for the highest possible RPM, because it sounds like the motor is too lean when cold. From what you are saying the bystarter is working.

idles screw one turn out and the air screw is 2 turns out for stock settings......Family owned Honda Shop for 50 years!
It pretty much works for most two stroke factory settings. :ndance: :hi:

There is NO standard setting for the idle stop screw in any manual.

OH and I know of mixture screw setting that is 2 turns either.

Where do you guys dig this BS up?

The manuals are avaiable on this site, USE THEM!

Two things, If you actually owned a shop you would never make an moronic statement like that because any mechanic worth hiring would know better and two,and the stock settings were not as described ever. OH and FYI the use all caps is the same as YELLING on the internet. :jack:

Why does the service manual say the air screw is 1 1/2 turns out and idle speed should be 1800 rpm plus or minus 100 rpm?

Because he is a moron and doesn't seem to be aware that even all the Sprees do not have the same setting much less the other models. :eyeroll:
