hey guys new here and would like to introduce myself i ride and work on my dirt bikes doing topend and bbk work all the time :peace: so i am a pretty good mechanic and will know how to do anything you guys think needs to be done, first off i dont own a spree yet but theres a guy on craigslist with 2 sprees a non running 86 and a running 84 with knobby tires front and back both for only $200! and i of course need transportation so im waiting for the guy to call me back i was wondering what the top speed stock would be for both assuming i got both running and driving and what the top speed might be after some simple mods, or do i have the wrong idea and should be looking at another 50cc like a Yamaha dt50 or Derbi Senda 50

Top speed on a stock Spree is in the 27 1/2 mph, + or - 2 1/2 mph. My stock 1985 Spree is at 30.5 mph on the speedo but the GPS say 28.4 mph. I would tend to believe the GPS as Honda speedos are always optimistic, sometimes very optimistic.

really that slow is this because of lack of power or is the gearing just really low? even on the 1986?, i here it is faster cause of its variator or something

It was the law. To be qualified to be classified as a moped, no license required to ride, the scooter had to have less than 50 cc and go no faster than30 mph.

you can make them go about 40 with out losing your take off if you wanted to go that route.......

When you make a Spree go 40 mph the take off is even more dismal than the poor things are stock, even with a BBK.

what do you guys mean by take off, like it just accelerates really slow or it takes its torque away, i live in a very hilly area so any thing that affects its ability to climb hills would be a no go, also was looking at the aero 50 are the claims of 40mph an exaggeration?, the idea of more speed is apealing but i dont like the look/size of the aero, would an aero 50 engine swap be the ticket?

a spree that goes 40mph would not climb hills very well.

Get the aero 50 if you live around hills

40mph from the aero is not exaggerated.

I have both the Spree and the Aero 50 and TJamz is right. No comparison.

ok im going to look at a $300 Aero 50 this after noon that ,"boggs down tell your wide open then goes like a bat outta *." from my experience sounds like its running really rich, but i think a read thread about this symptom coming from a stuck choke? shouldn't be a problem

went ahead and bought the aero for $280 ran good, new tires, and the brakes were amazing!, so the carbs apart in my garage and turns out the spark plug wasn't even screwed in all the way it was like half out and the metal gasket hasn't even been squished  so been awhile since my last 2 smoke, would the bog be from that otherwise im gonna mess with the needle hight

p.s. the carb was about the cleanest ive ever seen so i doubt its the jet or auto choke!

Leave the carb alone until you tighten the plug and try it again. The only real recommendation I know of for a stock Aero 50 is to up the main jet to an 85. It is suppose to help the top end. Honda is know for limiting top speed by using a too small a main jet, my Aero 80 suffered the same illness. Don't screw with the needle unless you actually experience an issue that the needle can cause.

good call on the carb went for a ride and it ran great and was pretty quick bog was solved, but lacked power on hills and seemed to bog under full throttle tho, so now i guess i will try and start modifying it and will try and get that # 85 jet, but i am wanting to know are there any differences between the spree and aero engine besides the variator, i noticed in the performance section nearly every thread is about the spree, so would it be safe to assume any spree mod will work on the aero, like exhaust, reed, cylinder, etc.

The porting and port timing are different as is the exhaust. What year is your Aero? The 1985 runs a slightly modified Spree intake and reeds. The 1983, '84 and the 1986, '87 Aeros all ran a different reed (bigger) and intake (4 bolt instead of 2) like the later Elites. These blocks will accept the CT manifold and big carbs.
