Sounds like more than that. Something is binding real bad if you have to use a hammer. A bad spring would not rebound but it would not cause it to bind unless there as a piece of broken spring is jammed in between some moving parts.

Agreed, pull off the belt cover and inspect it.

The C-Clip that holds the kickstarter gear probably came off/ come out of the groove that it sits in. It's binding the gear against the housing.

As the rest have said, you will have to remove the kickstart cover & inspect.

Mine gut gunked upp once and stopped coming back. I never had to use a hammer but I had to pull it back up by hand. I just took my cover off and greased up the spring and moving parts. I would take the spring off the cover and check everything out and find your problem.

Like previously stated, I don't think it's a matter of greasing something as it would be replacing something. You shouldn't have to use a hammer. :surprise:

Lol, I didn't see this post until just now, if you have a look at the "oops" post on here you might have the same problem as me :)

ive had that problem my self . it was the c clip kept coming off the gear .. i used some valve grinding compound and squared up the groove. it seemed to work for a while then i bought all new kick start parts becausr i didnt want any chance of it happening again when im out far.. take all the kick start parts out and clean really well then grease .also make sure there is a gasket in between the cover and were you bolt it up to the engine.

As stated above, most of the time that s*** locking up like that is caused by the smallest part of the kick start assembly, the cir-clip on the out side.
