Non ABS plastic repair on 85 and 86 Aero 50

Post by breaze »

I beg forgiveness up-front. I'm sure this question has been answered before.

I have had great success with the ABS cement on the body plastics on my Aero's. However, I have tried this and epoxy for plastic on my interior pieces (like the plastic inner piece which holds the glovebox and front turn signals) and I've found it doesn't hold. Is this made of different material and what has been found to adhere the best?

What I've read is that this is some form of poly and that plastic welding works - just wondering which adhesives have worked best.

Greetings:

There are legends of people getting paint to stick to the Poly-Mysterine plastics of the floorboards and gloveboxes. Conventional wisdom holds that nothing - and I mean NOTHING! - sticks to this stuff. You can melt it and re-mold it or plastic-weld it with special tools, but don't count on polyester or epoxy holding anything for long. Drilled lines of holes and Zip-Ties do work however.

A metal backing plate with holes drilled and pop rivets works very well. You can paint the rivets to match the plastic.

Like the idea of rivets and a backing plate. Think I'll try some plastic epoxy in conjunction.

Now where is that riveter - last time I used it was 3 houses, 25 pounds, and 2 wives ago...

I have 3 riveters, 2 for the small metal rivets and a monster for the big plastic ones my quad uses.

Having been a professional 2 stroke mechanic for a lot of years, I have several triple stacked roll aways full of tools. I also have a couple of quads, 2 trucks, 2 trailers, 2 boats, half a dozen outboard motors and a room full of guns, but I've had over 50 years to collect all this stuff.
