98 Elite SR, noob messed with carb...

Post by tyler_fitz »

Now it runs a little funny, anyone care to help this noob get his bike running like it was? What should i set the screws to? how can i fine tune this thing?

I have an 89 Elite LX that tops out around 37, but my 98 Elite SR would only get to 35, so I (without thinking) messed with some of the screws on the carb to give it a lil more "juice". At this point i've read the wiki and tried setting the screws back to the stock position, but it still either bogs down off the line or "gurgles" at top speed (which is still lower than the original 35mph).

Upon further inspection i found there was a big hole in my filter element, and chunks of it in the air box. I'll be cleaning out the carb and getting a new filter.

Any recommendations for a filter with the stock jetting?

The screws have no effect on top speed. They are for idle mixture and idle speed only. Replace your air filter. While you are waiting for the new filter element, pull the intake because you probably have chucks of air filter in the carb and reed valves.

Check your reeds too and make sure none of that filter foam got sucked down into them
