Grabbing clutch

Post by 48230M5 »

I am new to the forum and have a 100% stock '88 Elite 50LX (SA50). It had been running good last year (with the exception of some intermittent electric choke issues) and on my first ride this season the clutch grabs * just off idle. At idle it is free and when you start to accelerate it lurches and bucks as if grabbing and releasing. Once moving at over 5mph it is fine. It is worse when accelerating slowly. I thought maybe it would clear up after a little ride, but no such luck. I have very good mechanical skills, but I haven't even opened anything up yet. I figured I'd try asking first before I bark up the wrong tree. I think I have about 5000 miles on the scooter.

Has anyone had this issue? Are there any performance mods I may want to do in conjunction with this repair?

Thanks! Pretty big range price-wise. Any recommendations? I liked the Keli for $75. But if the Polini is way better, I could try to swing it.

Thanks. I'm gonna take mine apart this weekend and double check what is going on. I will get a hold of him. And I will let you know about my old clutch.

I took it apart and what had happened was the clutch pads had gotten covered with 2 stroke oil. Over the winter it had leaked down thru the carb and the seal on the belt drive cover is not great so it found its way down there. I sanded off the top of the pads, cleaned everything up and re-assembled. It rides great now! I won't be buying a new clutch anytime soon. Now I need to figure out why the 2 stroke oil leaked down.
