85 spree cuts out
my 85 spree runs great but for some reason when i go down a hill in between 30-35 mph it cuts out,not spitting or missing i mean it quits like someone hit the kill switch.if u let off the gas for a few sec then hit it again its fine until i reach the 30-35 markagain.any ideas

I've had that. Maybe the float is tilted so much it actually raises to the position where the needle closes?

Re: 85 spree cuts out
well took the spree out for some test runs and when i give it half throttle it doesnt do this,so now im thinking it might not be getting enough gas?
Re: 85 spree cuts out
You are not closing the throttle are you, That is a bad thing with a Spree.

Re: 85 spree cuts out
im assuming your talking about letting off the gas all the way?i changed carbs today and it did the same thing would bad reeds cause this to cut out this bad.if i stay on the gas it cuts out for 2-3 secs then picks up again.like i said its not missing its like i hit the kill switch then turned it back on again.thanks for the help
Re: 85 spree cuts out
I would suspect a bad spark plug before a carb issue. Have you put a NEW plug in there?
If the reeds were bad enough to cause this, you would not be able to start the engine.

If you don't mind, could you please explain how laying off the throttle when going downhill can be "bad" for the spree. I was a bit shocked upon reading your comment because I habitually close the throttle when going either downhill or when preparing for a turn or stop....hope you get my point...how can you perform the multitudes of maneuvers necessitated by riding a scooter on the streets if you can't lay off the throttle.
With much respect.
Re: 85 spree cuts out
The Spree PA series carb has a very small idle/pilot jet opening, meaning very little fuel (not just the Spree but the majority of 50 cc Honda scooters use a PA carb). So you are running at WOT, lots of fuel flowing thru the main jet and you close the throttle, now the main jet stops flowing fuel and the only thing flowing fuel is the very small pilot jet. Now your engine is extremely lean, which can melt the top of the piston, which in turn makes your top end junk and this makes the motor not run. You should roll of the throttle slowly as you slow down. The PA series of carb on the bigger Honda engines has a separate pilot jet from the idle mixture jetting. So when you close the throttle the pilot jet flows fuel and the pilot is normally 1/2 to 1/3 the size of the main jet, there by preventing an extreme lean condition.EthioKnight wrote:Hey Bear,Bear45-70 wrote:You are not closing the throttle are you, That is a bad thing with a Spree.

Re: 85 spree cuts out
that was a good explnation of the carbs on these bikes but i mysself think this is rare for this to happen or ruin your top end,the only reason i say this is i bought a spree new in 86 that i did this to all the time as a kid and this bike was still runing great at 8000 plus miles.im not saying this cant happen because it makes since i just think its one of those things that isnt going to happen to most people.
